March  2010
Sometimes It Gets Lonely Around Here

Alright, here's the deal.  Throughout the month of March we are almost constantly busy.  Be it Spring Training, March Madness, St. Patrick's Day, Spring Break, etc. al., there is always something going on and rarely any time to catch your breath.  I four peaks frontlike this, it gives me a lot of things to talk about in this, our weekly forum.  But then something strange happens...April!  I am not exactly sure why, but for some reason as soon as April begins our early to midweek daytime attendance drops.  Trust me, I realize that a decent portion of our clientele are folks with day jobs, but there seems to be something odd about the dramatic drop off as we enter the last 2 beautiful months before the "oven" gets turned on.  Let me break down what I have learned.

For many years I worked behind the bar during the day.  Sure there was more money to be made working the evening shifts, but similar to Pee Wee Herman, I'm a loner, Dottie, a rebel.  For more than 5 years I was privy to the food and beverage consumption habits of greater Tempe during daylight hours - think of me as an anthropologist of sorts - and I made many profound conclusions including:

1. People prefer to sit on the patio when it's pleasant outside

2. Strange as the second one may sound, two of the busiest months to work behind the bar are March and June (if only to complain about how crappy the weather is!)

3. It's gets kinda uncomfortable around here in the summertime.

Let's take a moment to extrapolate this information.  With the onset of spring, people come from all corners of the country to take in the beauty/weather of our fair state.  Wave after wave of seeing "perma-grins" on the faces of these folks kind of desensitizes you after a while so, by the end of the month you kind of take it for granted.  As these honored Four Peaks/Valley guests return to their homes (oftentimes with daytime temperatures still in the 40's, brrrrrr!), we Valley natives also seem to collectively withdraw...until the beginning of June...right when it starts getting uncomfortably hot!  I can only speculate as to why this happens each year so I am sending out my plea right now:

STOP BY AND ENJOY THE OUTDOORS WHILE YOU STILL CAN!

Now is the time to buck tradition!  Seize the Day!  Take back what is yours!  Stop and smell the roses!  I'm gonna blow up the Ark Rene'!  Jones...JONES!!!!  Sorry, I indiana jonesgot a little carried away there.  But seriously, together we can make this an April to remember!  Take off work early if you have to, you've earned it!  There is plenty of time to make up the extra time this summer because I have just been informed that the weather is going to get seriously HOT this year!  I'm not kidding, the Farmer's Almanac told me so!

At any rate, it's kind of a short Brewsletter this week for a myriad of reasons I will leave you to sleuth out yourself.  All of the answers lie somewhere in this issue, can you find them?  The clock is ticking and "events" will start falling into place very, very soon...
The Brewers Blog

There will be no Brewers Blog this week due to the Craft Brewers Conference and Brewexpo America (click the highlighted text to learn more about where they are!) going on in Chicago this weekend!  This conference will also include the announcement of The 2010 World Beer Cup results!  We wish them all the best of luck and hope they come back with more than a few trophies to put on the wall!

  This Week's "To Do" List

March Madness and Spring Training may well be over but the food and beverage extravaganzas are waking from a long winters nap to take their place!  Literally from now through the middle of May there is something new and exciting happening almost every day of the week!  From Saturday barbecues to Sunday Culinary Festivals, this time of year is jam packed with events for everyone!

"But Brewsletter Tim, how can you possibly expect me to pick and choose which event's to go to?  It is just so time consuming sitting and researching all of the quality shindigs forks and corks photothat go on in the Valley week to week!"

Fear not my faithful friends, that is exactly what I get paid to do!!  I have put forth all the leg work with the assistance of my trusty sidekick the "inter-webs" for a quick break down of all the places to see and be seen starting this weekend!  Wait, did I say this weekend?  I meant to say starting THURSDAY!

That's right my intrepid readership, the annual Forks and Corks event is going on in Phoenix at the Camelback Esplanade (map) from 5:30 until 8 pm on April 8th (chances are that's tonight by the time you read this)!  Now in its seventh year, Forks and Corks is a celebration of the finest food and wines (and some delicious craft beer favorites, don't you worry) the Valley has to offer.  More than 20 top chefs from restaurants and resorts will be offering a specialty or two from their menus for you to sample.  Several boutique wineries are also participating to round out the "corks" portion of the event.  Throw in a little live jazz and a Silent Auction with proceeds going to offer scholarships for the Arizona Hotel and Restaurant Education Foundation, and brother, you've got yourself a party!  This is a strictly 21 and over event, tickets are available at the door for $75, for more information check out their website HERE.

The following day, Friday the 9th, I recommend a day of rest so that you can be fully prepared for...az bbq fest

The Arizona BBQ Festival in Scottsdale on Saturday!  I don't even know where to begin when it comes to this baby!  First of all doors open at 10am and stay open until midnight!  Next, admission is only $10 for adults with kids under 12 getting in free, "food" tickets can be purchased at $2 a piece, but each ticket will allow you a healthy sample of some tasty treats from more than a handful of world famous BBQers!  If you ask me that is quite a deal!  I know what you're thinking, "But Brewsletter Tim, do you really expect me to hang out for 14 hours only eating BBQ meats?  Think about the human toll that would take!"  A very good question for the 12 people out there who may think that consuming professionally prepared BBQ for 14 hours isn't quite enough for them to drop 10 bucks on.  The Arizona BBQ Festival will also have live music throughout the day, a beer garden (including our own Four Peaks Beer Truck), cooking expos for any aspiring home barbequers out there, a kids zone...oh yeah, and a whiskey tent with a full bar!  I mean what else could you possibly need?  Scouring the internet I found this video clip from the folk at the 3TV Morning Show (the place with more stuff in case you haven't heard) with more information and some tasty looking ribs (HERE).  If you want to see everything they have to offer, check out their website HERE.  Just try to say "no".taste 2010

...and on the seventh day he rested from all his work...

It says so in the Bible and I think it would be prudent to follow those wise sentiments by treating yourself to a relaxing time at The Kierland Commons in Scottsdale for Taste 2010 on Sunday the 11th.  Food and drink come together for a truly fantastic evening.  Beginning at 6pm and going until 9pm, let a world of flavor take you away. Italian, Japanese, German, French, South American, Californian, Spanish, the list is almost endless. Over the years Americans have embraced food and wine from various cultures and countries and many have even become uniquely American themselves. This augmentation is what makes particular foods or wine stand out from each other. It's what makes it unique to different regions. It's what turns flavor into a true art form.  All right, I stole that directly from their website, but it sounded so good it was making me hungry just reading it.  Personally I attended Taste 2009 last year and it was easily one of the best events I attended all year.  As a special bonus, if you go to their website (HERE) and buy 2 tickets, just enter the promo code: TOV2K10 and you will receive $100 off your total purchase.  That's right, what would normally cost you $300 ($150 per person) is now only $200 ($100 per person) by simply adding this little promo code.  No, thanks aren't necessary, a job well done is reward enough...

Stop by any or all of these great events, we'll be looking for you!

The Grill & Tap Dispatch
with Dave Tanzi

It's been a busy week for all of us what with all the baseball and basketball and fantastic weather, etc.  We've been enjoying it all and logging many hours behind bar and on the floor, so that gives me less time to write - we'll keep it brief this week.

By now most of you should know about our new seasonal - Leroy Brown is back!  Makes a great black velvet with a little Ace Pear as well.  Same pricing as all our regular beers, available for happy hour discounts and growlers to go as well, so drink up amigos!

With baseball in season you should also already know we carry the MLB full package and we do our best to air every game we can on our multiple HDTVs.  If you don't see yours, just ask a staff member and we will do our best to accommodate you.  Thanks to everyone who came in to enjoy their home openers the last three days - hope you enjoyed the cracker jacks and hot dogs!  The dispatch will be back next week in full force - until then, stay thirsty my friends -

That'll do it for another issue.  With so many great food and drink events going on this week, I know my plate is pretty full (see what I did there?).  Like I mentioned earlier I really hope to see your faces at some of these events over the weekend, as much as I enjoy doing them it makes it much more fun to see some familiar faces.  Forks & Corks, Taste 2010 and The Arizona BBQ Festival all have the potential to be some of the best events of the year, you can count on that!  But before I let you go back to surfing your online pornography, let me finish with the weekly run down.

1. The Rockin' BBQ and Four Peaks Beer Tasting - Four Peaks Brewing Company and Talking Stick Resort and Golf Club are joining forces for a unique BBQ and Beer Tasting Experience!   This event begins at 6:30pm on the evening of Friday, April 23rd at the Talking Stick Golf Club's Wildhorse Grille.  We will be showcasing a full 7 of our beers and the Wildhorse Grille will be supplying an outstanding array of barbecued items.  For the full menu and location please check out their website HERE.

2.  Macadamia Nut Brown Ale - Still on tap for a few more days.  Supplies are quickly running low so if you haven't had one one yet by all means get in here!  It's a great excuse to ditch work early and sit on our porch to grab some rays.  It's been a rough couple of days at the office, you owe it to yourself!

3. Cheese Puff Day - Who's ready for Cheese Puffs?  Cancel any and all appointments you have and call your friends because Cheese Puff Day waits for no one!  Next Wednesday the 14th at 11am is the H-Hour of D-Day.  Come hungry!

4.  Baseball - It's been well documented by all news companies and sports affiliates but in case you haven't heard, Baseball is back and better than ever!  There is only 159 more games this season, don't miss another pitch!  With the MLB Extra Innings Package at both our locations be sure to catch every Menard's commercial from any local Midwestern feed (where there is always a tornado warning somewhere), Corky's Pest Control (greatest jingle EVER...Period) from Southern California or Vern Fonk Insurance (DANCE!) from the Northwest!  Locally produced commercials are easily the last, true art form!

5. Cinco de Mayo - It's coming up on the 5th of May this year, just thought I'd remind you.

6. Mother's Day - Is coming up on May 9th.  Keep your eyes open in the coming weeks for our time honored Breakfast Buffet menu which always offers a multi item mom-lette station, mimosas and other surprises!

Cheers!
