What are they going to be doing up at the Scottsdale Grill & Tap? I have absolutely no idea as of this writing. Always marching to the beat of a slightly different drummer, I have it on good faith that the Grill & Tap is also working on something that will knock your socks off, so stay tuned!
Let's talk about what we have on tap this issue. Number one, a quick Brewers recap of the time spent in Chicago. Number two, The Grill & Tap encourages you to live in the now. And numbers three through eleven involve everything from the Scottsdale Culinary Festival to Iced Coffee and Googlefiber. Now, on with the countdown... |

The Brewers Blog
We just got back from a great week
in Chicago at the Craft Brewers Conference and Trade Show. It
was a great week spent with old friends and some new ones. It
always helps us realize what a great (dysfunctional?) family the brewing
community is.
Chicago is a great town that in our
estimation is getting a little greater; thanks to craft beer.
Five years ago many of the bars and restaurants we went to would have
only served mass produced beer; Miller, Bud, Old Style and that would
be it. If you were lucky you could find some Goose Island.
Chicago has been, forever, a great food town and now it seems it is
becoming a great beer town.
Everywhere we went there were at least
four or five craft beer options on draft and several more offered in
bottles; mostly, if not all, locally made. There were also many
west coast and east coast options as well. It seems they're
covering all the bases for all the right reasons; they love craft beer
and they see its importance in fighting the homogeneity of the past
and its place alongside the great culinary offerings that demand
something
more than wine.
We found ourselves one day at Kuma's
Corner http://www.kumascorner.com/
(arguably one of the top three hamburgers
we've ever had. Try the Pantera with a fried egg... Good Lord,
that was tasty). It is an in-your-face, passionate, quality driven
pub/restaurant that pumps the thrash metal while cranking out some of
the most amazing food from a 16'x6' kitchen. It's packed;
it's always packed because they give a damn, but they do it their
way. In a way, the place reminded us of, well, us (minus the thrash
metal), and all the other great places in the Valley that don't
compromise,
that don't bow to conformity, that see the soul-enriching goodness
of throwing slab bacon and green chili into a plate of piping hot
mac-n-cheese,
and saying, "We want to live a little, not live forever."
What caught our attention was a short
statement on the menu:
"Kuma's Corner supports independent
businesses whenever possible. Please understand that a small brewery
may be entirely dedicated to the very best product that they can
possibly
offer, but the demand for such incredible passion may cause occasional
shortages of their art. Sometimes they need a grace period in
order to reload their cannons. The really good stuff may be unavailable
from time to time, so use the opportunity to try something new."
It just warms our hearts to know that
the bar and restaurant community gets it. They understand that
we're small and that we're not perfect, but that what drives them
drives us; pursuing exceptionalism in what we make. Also, that
restaurants, bars and breweries are hard work, but they're also a
hell of a lot of fun. |

The (Infamous) Scottsdale Culinary
Festival Wants YOU!
The Scottsdale Culinary
Festival is coming! As a matter it began on Monday with the Arizona
Culinary Hall of Fame Awards and includes events happening every day until
Sunday evenings "Best of the Fest" ceremony. With no
disrespect to any of the other events going on this week, I have a
sneaking suspicion that you are mostly interested in one particular
aspect, The Great Arizona Picnic
on Saturday and Sunday!Sure, you could drop by just for
the fantastic foods that will be offered over the weekend, but you know
that deep down you really want to spend a little extra to get into the
"Festival Within a Festival" that is the Southwest Festival of Beers. The SWFB
Beer Garden is located in the Northeast corner of the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall ( map of the GAP) and with more than 30
Breweries and Beverage Suppliers on hand offering over 200 specialty
beers, how could you possibly say no? Alaskan Brewing, Deschutes, Odell
and a little known local Brewery called Four Peaks are just a small
sampling of this years participants (for a full list click HERE). General Admission to the
Great Arizona Picnic is only $10 ( tickets). On Saturday the 17th the
Festival of Beers will be going on from noon until 7pm for an additional
$15 payable at the door and on Sunday it's from noon until 5pm for an extra
$10 (also payable at the door). A very small price to pay! If you've never been, their latest press
release sums it up best: The
Scottsdale League for the Arts, the nonprofit organization behind
the 2010 Scottsdale Culinary Festival, puts on the Southwest Festival of
Beers, hosted as part of the festival's Great Arizona Picnic. On
Saturday, April 17, and Sunday, April 18, guests can sample more than
200 beers, enjoy live music on the main stage, taste fabulous food from
vendors all over the Valley - and even take home a souvenir New Belgium
mug. Visitors to the Southwest Festival of Beers are invited to come
and go as they check out other happenings at the Great Arizona Picnic,
where more than 50 renowned businesses will serve food and drink. Even
diehard beer lovers will be tempted to sample the fare and watch cooking
demos, where popular culinary masterminds will offer food and wine
samplings and share tricks of the trade during their dazzling cooking
demonstrations.
As I mentioned earlier we will be one of more than 30
Breweries and beer vendors in attendance. Look forward to seeing plenty
of Kilt Lifter, 8th Street Ale, Hop Knot, Peach and Sunbru to be made
available for this event on both days! Stop by our Beer Tent and say
hello to all of your favorite managers, wait staff, bartenders, owners
and brewers! The time to buy is NOW (once again, here's the ticket link)! |

The Grill & Tap Dispatch with Dave Tanzi
I
watch 60 Minutes every week. Around my
house we call it "old people TV." Since
the commercial breaks are comprised of mostly Flomax and financial
planning
ads, I'm acutely aware that I likely skew the outside end of the show's
target
demographic, and that's fine by me. I'm
also fond of golf (both watching and playing), bran muffins, crossword
puzzles,
and shuffleboard (the outside version with a stick). Suffice
to say, the transition to a
retirement community will be comfortably seamless for me when the time
comes.
That
being said, even I have a tough time relating to the architect of the
show's
final three minutes. Since 1979, 60 Minutes has usually ended with a
(most
often light-hearted and humorous) commentary by Andy Rooney expounding
on
topics of wildly varying import, ranging from international politics,
economics, and personal philosophy on every-day life. Andy is now 91
years of
age and barely able to string three cohesive sentences together, but
somehow he
always sneaks in a reference to his days as a reporter for Stars &
Stripes
before and during WWII. He is the
nation's pre-eminent curmudgeon; refusing to trim his eyebrows and
complaining
about everything - mostly fans sending him gifts he deems impractical
and
perplexing, like local harvested honey.
The past few years his commentary has been mostly digressive and
incomprehensible; like over the holidays when he started a rant about
Christmas
that concluded with an anti-PSA about firework safety.
This
week, however, Andy made a profound, if not obvious observation for a
man of
his age:
"Last
weekend I heard a television weatherman say that summer was right around
the
corner. Well, summer is not around the corner. Summer starts on June 21.
The
corner is still 71 days away. I mean what's the rush?
Planning
is bad for the passage of
time. Planning anything a month in advance makes that month pass
quicker.
In
March I was looking forward to the
beginning of April because I like April but I was so busy looking
forward to
April that I forgot to enjoy March which isn't bad, but first thing I
knew,
March had passed and I'd hardly noticed it.
The
days that drag are the days when
we have nothing coming up in the future. We could use some of those days
because they're what we need more of to make time last longer - days
that drag.
So,
slow down, don't plan, savor
every minute."
It's
an old adage, but a pertinent one; especially for Arizonans in April. Now is the time to savor here - the weather
is perfect, the patio door is raised at the G&T from open to close,
and
Leroy Brown flows steadily; hell, we'll even fill your growlers with it. Don't worry yourself with the next seasonal,
or the upcoming summer swelter, just engross yourself in the utopian
moment.
Next
week I'm throwing the gauntlet down with Show Us Your Cans, but of
course,
that's next week - not now. Until then,
embrace the glorious present time with us up north, and come visit us at
the Scottsdale
Culinary Festival Beer Garden.

Cheerio!
That will just about do it as we wrap up another week in the
year 2010. Like Dave at The Grill &
Tap mentioned, it's time to take advantage of the here and now! Get out this weekend and join us at the Culinary Festival, savor each outdoor bar-be-que, glass of beer or time on a "certain" porch or patio before it's too late. We are already halfway through the
month of April and the comfortable outside weather will be retreating to the
north before you know it! That being
said, it's time for the weekly rundown! 1. Leroy Brown - Come and get it at both locations! A true Northern English Brown Ale with the
deliciously sweet toffee-caramel flavor.
It's back by popular demand and bound to go quickly! My advice to you is to run, don't walk, to
your nearest Four Peaks location and get one
soon, because when it's gone who knows when it will come around again!
2. Income Taxes - Hope you didn't forget! Tomorrow is the last day!
3. ASU Baseball - Our collegiate boys of summer are
currently 28-3 on the season. For the
love of all that is holy, show them some love! Maroon and Gold Four Peaks
Logo shirts are currently available at our Tempe
location for $14! Wear your ASU colors
proudly as you support your favorite Brewery, we are ready to take your order!
4. NFL Draft - Are you ready for it? The "action" begins with ONLY 1st Round coverage on the evening of Thursday the 22nd, restarts on Friday night exclusively for
the 2nd and 3rd Rounds and ends on Saturday with day long coverage of the 4th
through 7th Rounds! Stop in
and enjoy the comedy of it all!
5. HELLO WISCONSIN!! - In the March 21st online edition of OnMilwaukee.com, Milwaukee's Most Trusted Online Daily, we were forwarded a pleasant little mention in an article about a preseason match up between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Kansas City Royals. Mr. Andy Tarnoff, we thank you for all the kind words!
To read his article, click HERE.
6. Rockin BBQ & Four Peaks Beer Tasting - Have you made your reservations yet for the BBQ and Beer Tasting Event of the year? It's all going on at Talking Stick Golf Course in Scottsdale next Friday (that would be April 23rd for the Calendar Challenged). Pork Ribs, Beef Brisket, Roasted Chicken, Corn on the Cob, Kilt Lifter, 8th Street Ale, Hop Knot...the list goes on and on. BBQ, beer, raffle prizes and many more surprises await you. Tickets are only $45/person with the reception beginning at 6:30pm. Contact the good folks at Talking Stick at (480) 850-8617 to reserve your spot today. For the full menu click HERE.
7. Four Peaks Iced Coffee Has Arrived - The "Great Experiment" has begun at our Tempe location, it's up to you to make it a hit! We are currently brewing up batches of Tiramisu/Raspberry Iced Coffee. Come in and have one with cream, sugar, a shot of your favorite liqueur or even just straight! They are currently selling for $2.50 each, take that Starbucks!
8. Let's get the new "Googlefiber" in Tempe - Would you like to have a city-wide High Speed Internet fiber optic connection in Tempe that would allow networking speeds to run 100 times faster than they currently do? Who doesn't, am I right? Well go to googlefiber.com on your interweb machine and vote EVERYDAY from now until May 6th. Tempe has made the shortlist of 21 potential cities in which this new network will be put in for free. Everybody is allowed to vote once a day until voting ends, so bookmark the link and keep voting!
Cheers!
