What Time Of Year Is It?
It is the most joyous time of the year here in the Valley of the Sun. As the temperatures fluctuate in what can only be described as the hot flashes of some sort of desert menopause (is it going to be 85, 67, 98, 74 or 107 today?), we are reminded on one of the low ebb temperature days that there is something bigger and more grand than either spring or baseball can provide... the promise of the upcoming NFL season! That is correct, on Tuesday the NFL schedule planners released the complete list of this seasons' matchups to coincide with the vacation of Grill & Tap Reporter/4PBC Sports Analyst, Mike Kruchko! Yes, in some cruel twist of fate the "Football Intelligentsia" waited for Mr. Kruchko to be out in the Bay area watching Red Sox baseball before making the announcement. One can only speculate as to what he did to piss off the NFL Commissioner, we will have to wait until next week for that rebut!
At any rate, we couldn't be more happy to just forget another long and arduous summer is looming and concentrate on what is coming up this fall. First off, the Minnesota Vikings will be facing this years Super Bowl runners up, the Arizona Cardinals, at the University Of Phoenix Stadium on December 6th! Taking place one day before Pearl Harbor Day and I am already getting a feeling of "a date which will live in infamy" from one of these two teams, but only time will tell. In case you missed it, the entire schedule for all the teams can be found HERE. Don't forget the NFL Draft is coming up on Saturday April 25th. We will be opening at our regular time of 11 am, so catch the first few picks at home before stopping by to enjoy the rest of the 48 hours of seemingly endless coverage and speculation!
Just a quick recap of what sports enthusiast and all-around swell guy Mike Kruchko hit upon last week. Pat's Run is this Sunday the 18th. We encourage all of you to run the the 4.2 miles or to volunteer your time to celebrate the life of a true hero and inspiration to all of us. The website and application forms can be found HERE. Race time is at 7 am and all proceeds benefit the Pat Tillman Foundation, for more information on what they're about click HERE.
The Scottsdale Culinary Festival is going on this weekend as well. We will have that shining beacon of hope set up to placate the thirsty masses for both Saturday and Sunday. Of course I am referring to the Four Peaks Beer Tent. Spend a little time and chat with some of your Four Peaks favorites from both Tempe and Scottsdale all weekend long! It's one of our favorite Festivals to attend and my diagnosis for this year's "picnic" is, well...intoxicating! For more information on all the scheduled events click HERE.
This week we have a whole slew of new stuff for you! The Brewers switch gears this time around and give you some fresh information on what to look forward to in the next few exciting weeks! As noted above, Mike from the Grill & Tap is off on a mini vacation to the Bay area and in his stead we introduce David Tanzi who picks up where the irrepressible Mr. Kruchko left off. We also fill you in on an exciting new Beer Dinner coming up next Thursday, we premiere our own action/adventure segment and spend 5 Questions with Jon Schmidt. For those not in the know about our Distribution Brotherhood, I'm sure you join the likes of El Debarge by asking...

Just this last Thursday, April the 9th, our
esteemed owner James "Wild Card" Scussel was sent on a clandestine mission to
infiltrate the heavily fortified "Aluminum
Can Distribution
Center" or ACDC (no affiliation with
the rock band or alternating/direct currents).
The reason for this assignment was to retrieve evidence that the brand
new Four Peaks Canning plans were secretly
spirited away by an entity known only as Can-Nor. Believed to be the cousin of Kal-El
(Superman, Duh) and the other last remaining son of the planet Krypton, he has
a secret Fortress located somewhere in the hinterlands of Southern
California.
Our intrepid
adventurer braved poison darts, bottomless pits and a band of renegade Nazi's
to provide us this photographic documentation of what he discovered (Our man "Wild
Card" was even bold enough to get his picture taken with the contraband, how's
that for ballsy!). Upon his return a day
later, "Wild Card" had to be placed in protective custody for the safety of
both himself and his family. As of this
writing we have no idea what has become of him, he sends us random texts and
emails to let us know he's doing alright, but we can only hope justice can be
meted out soon so his safe return can be expedited. God bless you "Wild Card" Scussel...and
Godspeed!

5 questions with Jon Schmidt... The legend of the enigma known in certain circles (and to all his family and friends) as Jon Schmidt is pervasive. Having lived his entire life in the Tempe area, stories of his exploits are everywhere. I even heard that he once slayed the demon spawn of Kim Jong Il while quoting Ash from the movie "Army Of Darkness" without spilling a drop of beer (this report is unsubstantiated but impressive nonetheless)! When not punishing the powers of evil, he can be found securing new accounts and promoting the deliciousness of Four Peaks beer. Anyone who has been privy enough to receive his business card can only agree vehemently that he is the one, true "Bar Room Hero" of Tempe. I was able to catch up with him not too long ago to try get a deeper understanding of the rich tapestry that is his life. He proved himself a worthy adversary and I feel blessed he didn't condemn me to the same netherworld where he sent Jong Il The Lesser. Without further ado I give you Jon Schmidt, Smiter of Evil!
1. Which Four Peaks beer is
your favorite and why?
I think I would have to say the 8th Street Ale. It's a great balanced
beer and it's not too heavy. It has a crisp finish so that you can
enjoy it on a hot day, but it's equally as enjoyable on a chilly day
due to the complex nature of the beer. "Thank God for hops."
2. What is your favorite "beer" movie (Strange Brew,
Beerfest, or something altogether different)?
Explain your answer.
Strange Brew hands down! Its got everything... hockey players dressed
like storm troopers, ghosts, the evil master brewer with the crazy
voice and Canadians! My mom is Canadian so that's a plus. Love it.
3. Which aspect of serving Four Peaks in an "earth friendly" 12oz. can has you most excited?
I am stoked! What's not to love? Finally we can have a Kiltlifter on
the golf course, at the lake and by the pool. I can throw a sixer in
my pack when I go camping, crush them up and take them back when I'm
done. No more broken glass at the river baby!
4. When you finally find that you have a day off, which
place(s) do you like to go to enjoy a tasty Four
Peaks beverage?
There are so many great places in this town. Too many to list so I'll give you my top three in no particular order: 1.
Rose and Crown is a great little place in downtown Phoenix with
wonderful food and great beer. The patio is a radical place to relax
and soak up the great AZ weather. 2. TT Roadhouse... I love this place it's small, loud, and fun. The staff kicks ass and so does the jukebox. 3.
Casey Moore's is my neighborhood hang out. There is nothing better than
sitting down with a group of friends, having beers and telling lies all
day. Just bring your shovel.
5. You've worked for Papago Brewing, Rio Salado and Four
Peaks Brewing, please elaborate on how you fell into the
exciting world of beer sales. Let's not forget four months at BJs Brewing Company... But it all
started from my failed attempt at being a recording engineer. The money
was bad but the music was worse. A part time job at Papago turned into
a full time love for craft brew. Over the next few years I made a lot
of good friends, and tried to learn as much as I could about brewing
and the craft brew industry. I tried brewing but realized it was too
hard, and I wasn't good enough to be a great brewer. I have always
enjoyed being around people, and I love getting the opportunity to get
people excited about Four Peaks beer.

The Brewers Blog
Well, we're fresh out of "What the Hell Am I Tasting"
subjects so let's get caught up on recent and/or future happenings in the
brewery.
New Old Beer Update
Remember a long time ago we had a rather tasty Russian Imperial Stout
on draft; the Winter Wobbler? It just so happens that we saved some of it
and, for lack of a better place, we stored it in some 10 year old bourbon
barrels that we got from the Four Roses Distillery in Kentucky (Four Peaks,
Four Roses, get it?). Well, it's
time to try it, and by try it we mean time for you to try it (trust us
we've tried it plenty).
We're going to put one keg on this Monday around 3pm and we'll see how you like it. Sorry, Tempe
only on this one. We only have four kegs
of it so we'll announce when and where we release the others; it will get
even better with age. So keep posted.
Canning Update
The 12-pack boxes are here, the cans have been produced and will be
shipped to us this week, and the canning line representatives will be out the
week of the 27th. So, if all
goes well we'll have Sunbru and Kilt Lifter in
cans by early to mid May; just in time for pool season.
The 12-packs will initially be available only at the pubs but as soon
as we get really comfortable with quality and consistency we'll release
them to select outlets.
New New Beer Update
What's the next seasonal? What's
the next seasonal? What's the next
seasonal?
Alright already, we're a little busy here. Brewer Melissa Osborne, formerly Melphi, aka Mel-O has been tapped
to develop and produce the newest in a long line of great seasonals. She's chosen the oft overlook,
under-appreciated, and highly anticipated Saison for our next beer. Here's a definition (LINK). Leave it to the Belgians to make a
defined style un-definable. Perhaps it
helps to further explain Dr. Evil, who, of course was raised by Belgians, and
why others insist he is so complex...and, well, evil. MWAAH HAHAAH!!! Come to think of it "Meat Helmet
Saison" is a good working name; they were made in the spring season after
all. Too obscure? Probably.
We'll have more specific details once the recipe is done but look
for it some time mid-May.
What's a meat helmet? See this: "background on origin" and this: "used in a sentence" to watch some blogger
fall over himself to over-analyze something funny.

The Grill & Tap Dispatch
with Mike Kruchko (this week with David Tanzi)
Some weeks we gotta dig deep for entertaining news nuggets
to fill the dispatch, but not after an action-packed seven days across the
whole spectrum. This installment
practically writes itself, with a full cast of characters from Tyler
Hansborough to the Easter Bunny.
The Events - Sporting can be summed
up in one word: disappointing. A sports fan's potential dream week promised
MLB opening day, the NCAA tournament championship game, and the Masters; all of
which fell well short of potential.
Thanks to all of you who joined us on Opening Day - God was cruel on
Monday, as rain prevented many of our favorite teams from taking the field, but
we drowned our sorrows in $3 pints and enjoyed the action from the
fair-weathered regions. We learned that
nobody doesn't like corndogs, and that even Cracker Jack isn't recession proof
(as evidenced by their consistently underwhelming prizes). That evening the college basketball season
ended with a characteristically boring finale that was never close and
personified the most pedestrian and lackluster tournament in decades.
The Masters then got underway
Thursday in an endless sea of HD green, featuring a finally healthy Tiger Woods
making his triumphant return to major championship golf. Tiger and Phil were eventually matched in a
Sunday fantasy pairing that gave us 3 hours and 16 holes of potentially
historic fireworks before both golfers ultimately fell apart on the final
hole. So that was sports - in our
newspaper, it's the first two sections.
Here's the rest:
Events - Religious: Friday was
Good. On Sunday a little less than 2,000
years ago Jesus awoke from a long nap in a cave. In honor of this, plastic eggs filled with
candy are hidden around yards everywhere.
Events - Meteorological: Massive hail
on Saturday night.
Events - Environmental: We unveiled our new earth-friendly lunch and
dinner special menus on 50% less paper -
slightly smaller font, still large portions.
Events - Electronic: New video games dude! Installed Tuesday were Mega-touch,
Head-to-Head Hold-em Poker, and the crown jewel - Golden Tee on a 42-inch flat screen in High
Definition. Video golf never looked so
good.
Events - Culinary: If you haven't noticed yet, Friday nights now
feature a new delectable sweet ending option every week by Jess, our gourmet
pastry-chef to be. Also, our seasonal is
downright refreshing and has broad appeal - the Lost Dutchman Lager. It goes great with our Oatmeal Stout - ask
your server or bartender for a Dutch Oven.
It won't hold the layer long, but what it lacks in aesthetics it more
than compensates for in gustatory delights.
And finally, in the category of Events - Charitable, the north
squad will be entering multiple participants in Pat's Run this coming Saturday
morning in Tempe. For those of you who
don't know, Pat's Run is a charitable road race benefiting the Pat Tillman
Foundation. Jim Scussel has generously
sponsored all willing members of our staff, and in return we will honor our
employer by sporting Four Peaks shirts for the entire 4.2 mile charity
run. Mike and Marie will captain our
squad of misfits, and we got range kids - our likely front man Steve ran last
year's race in 32 minutes, and Colleen has volunteered to bring up the rear,
promising not to exceed a pace of "leisurely stroll." For more information, or to join our merry
band, visit patsrun.com.

A Few Parting Words...
As we wrap up another exciting issue, we would like to remind you that if you missed it on April 5th, The Queen Creek Olive Mill will be having one more "Grill In The Grove" this Sunday the 19th! Grilling, live music, wine tasting and Four Peaks Beer will all be there, so if you find yourself in the East Valley, by all means stop by! As you can see we are really looking forward to the next few weeks what with the new seasonal, Bourbon Barreled Russian Imperial Stout, and the new canned beer that will be coming out. It just so happens the original Tempe Brewpub will be turning 12 on April 26th (the Anniversary of our Grand Opening, it seems like yesterday if you were here then). It seems mildly apropos that we should offering 12 packs not that long after our 12 Year Anniversary! Customer Comment Of The Week...We would like to introduce a new segment to the Brewsletter called "The Customer Comment Of The Week" or TCCOTW. It's pretty straightforward, every week we get numerous comments on both the Scottsdale and Tempe locations. Sometimes the questions and/or remarks are so good we find it imperative to share them with our readership. So with that being explained, our first installment is a comment received from John Strange, John says: "Three friends and I went to the Tempe location for dinner on 3/21 and
3/22 and again for lunch on 3/23. I am a hard core Brewpub fan who
lives in the Northwest and have been lucky enough to visit many
breweries. Four Peaks is in the top three along with Sierra Nevada and Deschutes. I would place it at the top after the amazing service we
received and quality of food and beer. I can't wait to go back next
year. Tell me, how do you get food out of that kitchen so fast when
there are so many customers? Thanks for the three best meals I've had
in a long time." Thank you for all the kind words! That we were able to impress you on all 3 successive days is gratifying and something we always strive for (especially over a weekend during Spring Training!). We look forward to you visiting again and can't wait to dazzle you a fourth time! Don't forget to catch the movie " Beer Wars" tomorrow at one of these fine theaters in the Valley ( HERE). That'll wrap it up for this edition, catch you next week! Cheers!
"People who drink light 'beer' don't like the taste of beer; they just like to pee alot."
