Four Peaks Brewsletter
Worldwide leader in Cheese Puff Day coverage for 5 straight years!!
February 2010 Issue 2

A Very Busy Week Ahead...
February.
Why is it that the shortest month is also the one always
wrought with the most activities?
Whether it is that "Hallmark" holiday known as Valentine's Day, the
patriotic holiday that is President's Day or the religious holiday of Ash
Wednesday; we seem to be constantly moving about all month long. Don't worry I'm going to take the time to
break down each of these holidays, but just in case you've forgotten, we had
one of the most beloved holidays of all time just yesterday...Cheese Puff Day!
Sadly it's true, Cheese Puff Day has once again come and gone. That
special day when potatoes and cheese set all of their differences aside and
become one of the most insanely popular appetizers we've ever offered. With any luck you came in and
had your share, if not the next one is scheduled for March 10th,
mark your calendar. I mean, if the ultra
conservative potato can pair up perfectly with the insanely liberal cheese if even
for only one day a month, why the bloody hell can't we get the Government to agree on
anything once a year!
Are you ready for the 10th Annual
Strong Beer Festival in downtown Phoenix
this Saturday? Well this is it! The time for waiting is almost over and we at
Four Peaks
are more than ready to spend a quality afternoon with all of you. Along with some of our mainstays we will also
be bringing the Hopsquatch, the brand new Double Knot and a special batch of
our barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout; how's that for mixing it up this
year. Unfortunately presale tickets are
no longer available but you can still purchase tickets at the door for $45! Remember, this year the Strong Beer Festival
will be held at the Margaret T.
Hance Park
in Phoenix (map) from 1 pm until 5 pm. A list of all the details, participating
breweries (about 50 so far), and a sample of the food being served is available
HERE. I can't stress this enough...DO NOT
MISS THIS EVENT! For more info on our participation, check out this weeks Brewers Blog below.
Valentine's Day is this Sunday! If you and your
significant other are looking for something to do that evening, stop into either Four
Peaks location
for our Valentine's Day Dinner "I Think Your Special" Specials. Both Four Peaks locations will be treating this holiday a little different than a typical Sunday. Our standard Brunch will last until 2 pm like any regular Sunday, but the Dinner Specials will be available starting at 4 pm (not 2 pm like a normal Sunday). The regular menu will, of course, be offered all day!
Presidents
Day is coming up this Monday. Originally
referred to as "Washington's Birthday", we now commonly call it Presidents Day
and include the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.
In honor of this holiday which celebrates two of our greatest and most
well known Presidents', shouldn't you stop in for a Double Knot DIPA at one of
our two locations? It seems elementary that
they should be honored together. Get one
today they are going fast!
I hope that's enough for you to do in the next 5 days! As for the rest of the content in this issue, we've got a real top notch issue right here on your desk/lap/cell phone! This weeks Brewers Blog elaborates a little further on our participation in the 10th Annual Strong Beer Festival, the avoidance of trends and our dedication to consistency. Mr. Dave Tanzi, our newest full time contributor, Grill & Tap Dispatch Corespondent and Entertainment beat writer takes time to ponder why he isn't feeling the typical post-football depression that normally accompanies the days/weeks directly after the Championship Game. Lastly, I begin a new segment this week on places to go for food and drink around some of the Spring Training Baseball facilities around the Valley. It's some seriously exhausting work trying to keep you entertained but, dammit, it's well worth it! | |
* Breaking News *
According to an article published on the Fox News Website, Four Peaks Brewing Company is 1 of the 7 best American Microbreweries.
It's true! In one of those "hometown boy makes good" type stories, Four Peaks was recently listed as number 6 of the top 7 American Microbreweries in the United States. Although by no means scientific in respect to the numbers game, the criteria was based upon product taste and "hangout" factor. A much more emotional/comfort scale which we find hard to dispute! The Brewers Blog
Well, by all accounts the new Double
Knot DIPA is a huge success. And by huge we mean strong, as in
it sneaks up on you, so be careful out there. If you feel like
you've over-indulged, or maybe you feel like that much hop is over-indulgent,
take heart in this bit of news: LINK.
Speaking of big beers the Arizona Strong
Beer Festival is this weekend. It's always a fun time for us
because we get to break out some of the big beers that people forget
that we make; '08 Hopsquatch Barleywine, '08 Oak-Aged Russian Imperial
Stout, Double Knot, Hop Knot, and Raj IPA. With all these big beers
it can get to be a long day for the all the participating brewers.
We've kind of gotten to be known as the "relief station" amongst
other brewers; we often hear, "hey, did you guys bring anything I
can just drink?" And we're glad to supply a cold can of Sunbru
to a palate-weary brewer.
We often do get labeled as "boring"
or "safe" by some of the uber-geeks out there because we don't
make monster beers all year round. They see Kilt Lifter and 8th
Street Pale Ale as being nice, quiet, beers that are drinkable but they
aren't memorable in terms of sending one into a hop induced coma or
an ethanol induced stupor after just one. We've talked about
these folks before; they're the ones who need to eat habaneros while
bungee-jumping...on fire.
These extreme beers are all the rage
now. But, 13 years ago when we came out with a 6% alcohol, smoky,
Scottish-style ale, that was pretty extreme. And it was hard to
find a fresh, clean representation of a true English Best Bitter in
these parts until 8th Street Pale Ale came along. Now
these beers are run-of-the-mill to some people. But we see it
differently; great beers and great styles endure. It's bit of
a circular argument but they wouldn't be great styles if they weren't
appealing to a great number of people.
But, like those fellow brewers seeking
relief from the extreme, we are seeing a shift back to these styles;
a rediscovery of beers that started the craft-brewing revolution.
We find the words of Brewer Matt Brynildson of Firestone Walker Brewing
Co., to be heartening. He was asked to participate in a collaboration
brewing project at Stone Brewing Co., arguably the progenitors of the
extreme beer phenomenon, and when confronted with adding more and more
hops to this beer he replied, "over-hopping beers is so 1990's".
We couldn't agree more. We just think it's nice that we never
compromised our ideals for a fad and we're glad to see that people
are finding drinkability and balance as the new "extreme".
And don't worry, when you get tired
of the latest sour beer or the next great hop-bomb (Double Knot included),
we'll be here with some relief.
Sunbru, anyone? |

The Grill & Tap Dispatch with David Tanzi
"You
can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline - it helps if you
have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very
least you need a beer." - Frank Zappa
Lately I've begun to feel that our
most important national sports holiday, while delivering some superb drama in
recent years (and Sunday's game was certainly no slouch), has a decidedly
anti-climactic subtext. The two weeks
off after the conference championship games is a huge momentum siphon; the Pro
Bowl is, ironically, the single most pathetic display in professional athletics
and media day has developed into the most preposterous circus imaginable. Post-season melancholy started to seep in at
halftime of the NFC Championship Game.
This year however, in what is
historically a down week, I'm feeling surprisingly optimistic, and it's in no
small part due to the above quote I ran across recently. Mr. Zappa displays some keen insight to
nation building: give them beer, fear, and something to cheer (and for god's
sake don't charge them extra for their checked baggage). I would also add a few more requirements: you
should have a respectable band or two, a few competent film directors, and a
bobsled team; because honestly, if you can't produce four guys to push a sled,
and Jamaica can, than who are you kidding?
We
are, of course, very fortunate to be part of a nation that is flush in all
categories, and that is why I am so filled with hope for the forthcoming year,
even in the wake of the Super Bowl:
Four
Peaks is now ground zero in the beer department with Double Knot debuting as a
distinctively American tour de force. We
had to introduce a new case of snifters to our glass racks this week just to
keep pace.
In
music, 2010 will feature new American albums by the Strokes, MGMT, and Beck
just off the top of my head, probably a few from some dynamite new kids we
don't even know about yet. Also,
Canada's finest, Arcade Fire is due for a May release.
The
scheduled 2010 film releases include remakes of A Nightmare on Elm Street, The
A-Team, Robocop and Red Dawn (seriously!), in addition to Iron Man 2, Seth
Rogan as The Green Hornet, TV's Arrested Development in a film adaptation, and
the Farrelly Brother's production of the Three Stooges featuring Jim Carrey,
Sean Penn, and Benicio Del Toro. Also
Johnny Depp channels Hunter S. Thompson again in The Rum Diaries; Sly Stallone
directs a team of mercenaries including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke,
Jason Statham, Jet Li, and Dolph Lundgren.
And perhaps the biggest buzz is circling around a mystery project from
director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Memento) starring Leonardo
Dicaprio, Michael Caine, and Joseph-Gordon Levitt.
In
addition to the World Cup, the sporting life will bring us the newly titled
Waste Management Open, perhaps the last 65 team NCAA tournament field, and a
highly anticipated appearance by the new Tiger Woods at The Masters.
We'll
cover weapons and air travel in a forthcoming dispatch perhaps, but in the
meantime you can shoot flying geese and other fast moving game in our newly
acquired Big Buck Hunter Pro that's taking over the game space upstairs. We also have $3 "you call its" every evening
from 10 pm to 1 am, a Four Peaks Grill & Tap exclusive as well as the best
kept secret in Scottsdale.
Finally,
although "Show Us Your Cans" is on hiatus this week, we want to announce Jeff
Garelick as January's winner and recipient of Four Peaks Kilt Lifter or Sunbru 12 pack for his photo of Sunbru at The Cathedral of
Seville. Congratulations to Jeff, and
keep those photos coming everybody!

Spring Training Venue Preview (pt. 1)
Congratulations are in order for the New Orleans Saints on their recent Super Bowl victory! Condolences are in order for anyone in the New Orleans area that is trying to get any work done this week when the Super Bowl party quickly morphs into Mardi Gras as we approach Fat Tuesday! For the rest of America, we now turn our sights to the beginning of the National Pastime, baseball! We in Tucson and the Greater Phoenix Metro are fortunate to get an extra month of Major League Baseball before anyone else in the U.S. (save Florida). So as we all prepare for the start of Spring Training out here, I thought I would take the time over the next month to profile a specific stadium each week in regards to the quality bars and restaurants near each that serve our beers! Are you going to catch the Athletics and want to find somewhere nearby to get a Kilt Lifter? Is there a decent bar to get a good bite to eat and an 8th Street Ale within walking distance of the Brewers Game? These are the questions I looked into so you don't have to. Let's begin with Scottsdale Stadium, home of the San Francisco Giants, which is located at 7408 East Osborn Road just down the road from "Old Town" Scottsdale. There are plenty of great places to go to get in your "pre-game warm-up's" around Old Town, here are a few that we think you should check out starting with some quality breakfast places seeing as it's the most important meal of the day (click on the venue to get addresses and more information): Cafe Carumba - Voted one of the Valley's best new restaurants, they open at 7 am everyday for all you early risers out there. Not only do they have Bloody Mary's they have your favorite Four Peaks beer on tap (pictured above)... Four Taps, Four Peaks! Daily Dose - The 2009 New Times Award Winner for Best Hangover Breakfast might be the place to begin for those who stayed up a little later than expected. The Breakfast Club - Another award winner, they are a great family friendly breakfast spot for those who want to save the beer til after the game! For those of you who don't consider themselves morning people, here are a load of other options to assist in getting you a pint and a bite a little later in the day: Oregano's - The Valley favorite and always a great place to get a Four Peaks beer Carlsbad Tavern - One of our all-time favorite places to go. Great patio, great beer and great folks. Stax Burger Bistro - If a quality burger joint is what you want before the first pitch, go to the Burger Bistro. With Kilt, Hefe, Sunbru and Hop Knot all currently available, you can't miss! Also worthy of some Four Peaks praise are Grimaldi's Pizzaria and Jac's Pizza And Pub (formerly the Nello's Pizza at 7213 East 1st Ave. in Scottsdale) both of which make a fantastic pizza but are also known to pour a mean Kilt Lifter. If you are looking for just a good quality bar, just a few steps away from Jac's is Pattie's First Ave. Lounge. Some of our other favorite bars/saloons just down the road a piece are The Rusty Spur on Main Street or Prankster's Too on Thomas. Any of these options are bound to get you into the perfect Spring Training mindset, and with the first games still a few weeks away why not stop into each of them! |

Final Musings...
Was that not the most mind-blowing and information-filled Brewsletter you've received in some time? If you had half as much fun reading it as I did putting it together we would have enjoyed it...quite a bit, I guess. Now for a few other things to look forward to... The Olympics will be starting this weekend with opening ceremonies beginning tomorrow (Friday) at 7 pm local time. What better way to bridge the gap between football and Spring Training? We invite all of you to stop in to either one of our locations to take in the wonder and spectacle of this latest of Olympiads live from Vancouver, Canada! The whole shebang really kicks off at 10:45 Saturday morning with the splendor of the ski jump! Men's Alpine Skiing will follow shortly thereafter with the first medal ceremony of the Games! What? That's not enough for you? How does Ladies Ice Hockey sound? The Swedish and Swiss Women's teams will be heating up the ice starting at 1 pm! I'm excited! You're excited! And we've got 16 whole days of winter fun and magic to go!! Don't forget about the 46th Annual Scottish Highland Games beginning on February 27th! Just as the aforementioned Vancouver 2010 Olympics are winding down, our local Scottish Games are going to be starting right up. Sure, these games won't have curling, bobsledding, luge or figure skating but they will have Four Peaks Brewing Company as a proud sponsor! Just looking over the pamphlet they have for the games, one thing really stands out, "BEER, WINE & SCOTCH!" Take that National Olympic Committee! The Scottish Highland Games will be taking place at the Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix, for further information check out their website HERE.
See you all next week.
Cheers!
