Are You Ready For The Summer?
According to every calendar, summer is not set to officially begin until the 21st of June. As anyone who has ever spent more than a year out here in the appropriately named "Valley Of The Sun" knows, it tends to begin around the middle of May and lasts until about Halloween. What does this mean? Mostly that your typical adult beverage will go down quicker than Ashton Kutcher's latest movie project! Being that the sun is starting to rise at 5 am and continues to beat down on you until sometime around 8 pm, we have a little something special in store for you. That little something comes in the form of "added beverage hours" for certain World Cup Soccer games. Seeing as every World Cup match begins before noon locally, we have decided to open at 10 am this Saturday for the big U.S.A./England soccer game! How does that sound to you? Pretty good, huh? How about if we carry that idea right down the line to include ALL of the U.S. soccer appearances in the 1st round? You heard correctly, we are planning on opening at 7am on both Friday, June 18th and Wednesday, June 23rd! We have made it our special mission this year to get involved with all your United States soccer cravings. Keep in mind that this is only to serve your beverage needs, the kitchen will continue to operate at its normal hours on those days (sorry, brunch will not be made available). This is for the hardcore soccer enthusiasts only, don't expect us to be putting the "Today Show" on any of our TV's for ya. Don't miss a moment of the action! The U.S.A. soccer game isn't the only crucial competition going on this Saturday; kudos to the ASU baseball team who advanced to the Super Regionals for the '09-'10 College World Series! This time around it's a best of 3 series against the Razorbacks of Arkansas right here at Packard Stadium. First pitch is scheduled at 6 pm and will be televised on ESPNU. Might as well make Four Peaks your base of operations and spend the entire day here! It's hella hot out there ( LATEST CWS BRACKET)! Speaking of this weekend, who's making the trip down to Rocky Point for the Circus Mexicus Festival featuring Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers? We know that it's going to be chock full of fun and sincerely hope that everyone has a blast. Don't forget to get your party pants on one day early and get them down to Four Peaks for the Official Circus Mexicus Pre-Party Extravaganza this Thursday the 10th. Beginning around 3 pm, enjoy a full 3 hour Roger Clyne rock block with your Happy Hour beverages, meet up and make plans with other Circus Mexicus Festival goers or just come down to have a good time! In This Issue:- The Brewers talk about the fun of sitting around and making beer all day, it's just as much fun as you'd imagine! - The Grill & Tap discusses 2 year old chain smokers, your soccer fix, and that premonition they had about James Cameron - Friday around 3 pm is the Grand Unveiling of the RyePA Seasonal! - Plus your weekly countdown, new brewery pics and the latest on our new website! |

The Brewers Blog
So you want to be a brewer, huh?
Let us guess; your dream job would be to sit around and make beer all
day? Well, OK: Are you mechanically inclined? Here's what broke this week (keep in mind it's only Wednesday):
the top seal on the new filter leaks, the program for the PLC in the
brewhouse got possessed and now randomly opens valves and shuts down
temp probes, the labeler suddenly forgot how to release labels via the
air-release system, the sump pump outfeed line is spewing everywhere,
the softener for the reverse osmosis system quit working, and the grist
case won't fully empty. Get to work... How are your accounting skills?
We just spent two hours filling out our excise tax paperwork.
There can not be a more mind-numbing job than working for the government.
This wouldn't be so bad if it was once a year; but we have to do it
twice a month while smiling and handing over a check for a tax that
99.5% of all businesses DON'T have to pay. Ready to get dirty and sweaty?
We estimate our cleaning bills are higher than most people. Not
only is brewing a dirty, dusty, greasy piece of work but we get to do
it without the aid of air-conditioning. We do have swamp coolers,
but, oh yeah, they broke too. How are your warehouse skills?
Can you drive a fork-lift? Can you fix a pallet-jack? Can
you drive a truck? Can you remember where you put those six kegs of
Hopsquatch that you stowed 11 months ago? Do you like to clean things?
No, really, do you really like to really get things REALLY clean?
We're talking chemicals that can remove skin, sanitizers that can
permanently change your vision. Scrubbing, scraping, spraying,
sending your work to the lab and having them report back that, yes,
you did indeed kill that mystery bug but, good news! We've got
a new one, and it seems resistant to all the things you just did. Are you a morning person?
No key has ever been put into the brewery doors after 4am. Like working nights?
Some shifts you'll get home before 10pm!! Do you like beer? Because
after taking several sensory evaluation courses and multiple judging
sessions, sometimes you have to remind yourself that this isn't an
opportunity to find flaws. Brewers don't drink beer...they analyze...
everything... to death... Like thinking on your feet?
Try doing it for eight hours in poorly designed fishing boots on
concrete.
Don't get us started on the smell of those boots, or the feet, which
look like you were in the pool all day. You'll understand why
we wear flip-flops on just about all other occasions. Got to let
the dogs breathe... Do you like to travel the world,
experience new cultures, immerse yourself in the traditions of far away
peoples? Good, it's called Travel Channel. We'll
see YOU at 4am. Would we trade it for any other
job? Are you kidding? We get to sit around and make beer all
day!

The Grill & Tap Dispatch with Dave Tanzi
In this week's episode, The British Are Coming, Youth in Revolt
and the massive media influence of the Dispatch is finally, irrevocably and
undeniably evidenced.
REVOLUTIONARY WAR, PART DEUX:
The first rule of journalism is don't bury the lead, and the most
pertinent news of the week is that our Scottsdale location will indeed be
airing the broadcast with audio on Saturday to accommodate soccer fans for the
England vs. US duel on the pitch.
Coverage starts at 10:30 am; match begins at 11:30. Don't forget to complement Mike on the
stellar signage he produced to commemorate the event, and be sure to ask him
about his equally stellar and almost semi-pro youth soccer career.
YOU'VE COME A LONG WAY, BABY: Only the good die young, and this week we saw
two very youthful up and comers off to record setting starts down that
path. The clear prodigy is a
chain-smoking 2 year old Indonesian who instantly became a smash internet
sensation with his first highlight reel: HERE.Not to be outdone, a 4-year old Philly fan
was caught on tape enjoying an oat soda (http://www.twitvid.com/MPEE7). They both make my nostalgic for my youth.
DISPATCH DELIVERS: In our May 26th edition we submitted the
following blurb about the spewing oil in the gulf:
"The top engineers at
BP and the US government has concocted every conceivable solution, and has thus
far come up empty handed. What they need now is a true visionary,
conservationist, creative problem solver and noted aquatic explorer. And most
importantly, someone experienced in managing hundred million dollar projects
that sometimes seem to be sinking. This is why we believe there is only
one man who may have the skill set to propose a real solution - James
Cameron."
Three days later he was
at the gulf consulting with BP engineers.

Zen and the Art of Digital Engagement Presentations...
We are in the midst of our brand new website build and all of the individual aspects are beginning to come together. The pictures have all been taken, the artwork is almost ready to be animated (yup, animation!), social media aspects are getting streamlined and content is being written. So far no casualties to speak of.
Having just gotten back from an hour long progress update and a short Digital Engagement Presentation with the good folks at Blind Society (our new website guys) in Scottsdale, "Wild Card" and I are starting to really get jazzed. Below is just a sample of the pictures that we will be utilizing on our soon-to-be-new-home:
Our latest brewing system with that right-out-of-the-box shine! |
Like a row of steel sentinels standing guard, behold our FERMENTERS!

Now Lets Blow This Thing and Go Home.
Time for the weekly rundown:
1. Father's
Day - About a week and a half out! If
you are planning on spending it at our Four Peaks Tempe location, make sure you
contact Steve Lynch at steve@fourpeaks.com
to make reservations! If you are
planning on imbibing at the Four Peaks Scottsdale location for their expanded
brunch menu, simply show up! We're about
10 days out kids, let dad know how much he means to you!
2. Mötley Brüe RyePA - Friday is the big day! Right now we're looking at about 3 pm for the first inaugural pour. Should this end up changing, keep an eye on
our Twitter and Facebook pages. Be here
for the historic first pint!
3.
Stone Brewing Company's Cali-Belgique IPA - We're still waiting to tap this
baby! The only thing holding us back is
the remainder of The Old Guardian Barley Wine.
What's the matter? Is everyone
burnt out on Barley Wine? There isn't
that much left, come in and polish the rest of it off so we can break out the
new keg!
4.
Interleague Baseball - It begins this weekend!
Everywhere else in the country American League teams will be playing
National League teams...unless you are here.
The Diamondbacks play the St. Louis Cardinals (also in the National
League in case you didn't know) this weekend then promptly hit the road! The only interleague play taking place at
Chase Field this year will be a 3 game series against the New York Yankees on
the 21st -23rd. It's
almost like the MLB foresaw the Arizona Immigration Bill passing and purposely bypassed us this year...hmmm?
5.
Stephen Strasburg - Did you see the new pitching phenom for the Washington
Nationals on Tuesday night? He had 14
strikeouts in 7 innings in his Major League debut! This gives me hope, I am only 4 pitches and a
100 mph fastball away from breaking into the Show!
6.
Hot Enough For Ya? - That saying never gets old!
Make sure you take full advantage of this weekend's highs in the mid-90's! This is probably the last time we'll see a
weekend like this for quite a long time.
Remember we are open at 10 am for World Cup soccer on Saturday, so wake up
early my friends and enjoy the day in its entirety!
7.
1984 - Remember 1984? Ronald Reagan was just
elected to his second term, Ghostbusters and Terminator ruled the box office, Madonna
came out with "Like A Virgin" and "shocked" us all, and a Union Carbide chemical
plant released a cloud of gas that killed more than 15,000 people in and around
Bhopal, India. Yeah, remember that? Well the government of India finally got around to
handing down its judgment to the 7 people held responsible for that leak after
26 years. You want to know what they got? You really
want to know? They each got 2 years in
jail and a $2,175 fine... for 15,000 people dead... with the chance at an appeal! It saddens me to say that I am absolutely
serious about this (article).
8.
Four Peaks Margarita - We currently
unveiled a new Four Peaks Margarita! It's all natural, contains no preservatives
and is comprised of locally produced (in the case Cruz Tequila, locally
imported) ingredients. Come in and ask
for one by name! Look for the 4PBC
Margarita Profile in next week's issue!
9.
Merchandise - As the summer continues to heat up, keep your eyes open for some
new Four Peaks apparel! Coming in the next few weeks we'll be receiving
some new hats, new tie dyes, a return of the Hefeweizen T-Shirt and a new style Sunbru shirt amongst other
products! Come in today and purchase one of our Four Peaks Maroon and Gold Logo T-Shirts
to show your support of our ASU Baseball Team.
10. Arizona Brewing History - We thought you might like to take a gander at the recently launched "Brewing Arizona" website (HERE). It has some fantastic art, pictures and advertising dating back to Pre-Prohibition days. Just something to check out whenever you have the time.
Cheers!
Your Friends at The Four Peaks Brewery and The Grill & Tap
