To Honor The Memory of a Good Friend...

Scott Spicola was a former owner and brewer at Ali'i Brewery in Honolulu, Hawaii.  In his time there he created many fantastic beers that cultivated quite the following both at his Brewery and at Scott Spicolarestaurants around Hawaii.  He was also a good friend of our Head Chef, Arthur Craft; growing up together, going to concerts, hanging out and generally just being the kids that they were.  Scott passed away a little over 4 years ago at the age of 35, as a result Arthur and Scott's family wanted to do something special in his memory.  The Macadamia Nut Brown Ale (available this Friday the 2nd), which was his signature beer at Ali'i, was decided upon to be a fitting tribute, the easiest way to share one of his passions with the rest of us.

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting briefly with his father, John, about his son and all of the things that Scott enjoyed in life.  Not surprisingly he sounded like an outstanding individual who I know would have made fast friends with all of us here.  He gave me a few short paragraphs about Scott and I thought of ways to try rewrite it.  It just didn't seem fair to alter any of the content or to change the words that his father had written.  So with only a few alterations on the beers he created, the following is the unabridged version describing the type of man Scott was and what the Macadamia Nut Brown Ale we will be offering stands for:

------------------------------------

Ali'i  Brewery, Hawaii's Original Microbrewery, began in 1994 on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. They were a very small microbrewery with a capacity for 5000 bbls annually. They soon ran into financial difficulty when they found themselves with four batches of bad beer. The beer was lab accessurf 1tested and had to be thrown out.

Meanwhile, Scott Spicola had been brewing small batches of beer at his residence in Honolulu while attending the University of Hawaii. His reputation around town preceded him and it grew to the point that one day he received a panic call from the owner of Ali'i. Scott was asked to bring four of his home brews to the brewery for a taste test and the rest, as they say, is history.

Scott became the brewmeister and for the next two years developed many successful brews including the Kona Coffee Stout, Waimea Wheat Ale, Pau Hana Porter (which is rated 19 out of 20 points in the "Beer Me! - Hall of Fame"),and his signature Macadamia Nut Brown Ale amongst many others

For those of you who knew Scott, you will appreciate that he also developed and produced a very, very successful Hemp Ale, but had to drink it quickly and cease production when local authorities discovered it. In 1996 Scott, along with a partner, bought the Ali'i Brewing Company. Four years later, due to some unforeseen circumstances, they unfortunately had to shut down the brewery. Although Scott was heartbroken, his beers continued to sell around town at the various restaurants and local pubs until one evening at a favorite hangout for the locals, Anna Bananas, the accessurf logolast drop of Macadamia Nut Brown Ale, was consumed by friends and family and it was finally over.

Scott has since passed away and thanks to his good friend, Arthur Craft, one of the owners of Four Peaks Brewery, and in honor of Scott, Macadamia Nut Brown Ale will be resurrected as a Premium beer starting on April 2nd.

Scott loved many things in life, among them surfing, children and drinking good beer. He loved what in Hawaii is called the Aina. Translated it means life, people, the air we breathe, the land, the ocean. In his memory the Scott Spicola Memorial Fund has made contributions to the only nonprofit organization in Hawaii, known as Accessurf Hawaii, that provides adaptive surfing, swimming, and stand-up paddling to individuals with disabilities.

Through AccesSurf's "Day at The Beach" program, kids and adults with any type of cognitive or physical challenge have the opportunity to explore their own level of abilities by entering the ocean to learn how to surf, swim and snorkel. Currently, the organization has helped people with Spinal Cord Injuries, Traumatic Brain Injury, Visual Impairment, Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Downs Syndrome, Amputees and others. More than 400 volunteers including professional surfers, medical professionals, international celebrities and community members dedicate their time to help participants enjoy the beach and ocean with their families in a barrier free environment.

AccesSurf Hawaii is supported by contributions from individuals, businesses and organizations. For more information on AccesSurf and how you can support our families with disabilities, visit www.accessurfhawaii.org or the Four Peaks Brewery to sample Ali'i Beer. A portion of your Ali'i Beer purchase will be directly donated to AccesSurf to support its programs.

AccesSurf's mission: AccesSurf empowers people with disabilities by providing adaptive surfing instruction and therapeutic surf 2educational programs on water recreation and enriches lives by allowing families to access the beach and ocean in a barrier free environment.

Four Peaks will offer Scott Spicola's signature beer with all of the proceeds going to Accessurf Hawaii.

So lets remember that as we toss a few Macadamia Nut Brown Ales back in Scott's memory, we will be remembering the Aina that Scott loved so much, and will be contributing to a fine cause that helps the lives of those disabled, allowing children and adults of all ages to enjoy life, the air we breathe, the land, and most importantly, the ocean, all of which defined Scott's life.

---------------------------------------

So please, stop by our Four Peaks Tempe location starting this Friday to try one of Scott's most popular offerings (our Scottsdale location will have our original Leroy Brown instead).  It is in limited supply and, as John Spicola mentioned above, all of the proceeds will be donated to AccesSurf in Scott's name.  We are proud to have the opportunity to share this recipe with all of you and would hope that you will have the time to enjoy one with us.  For more on the specifics of the beer, check out the latest installment of the Brewers Blog later in this Brewsletter.

The Brewers Blog

We have sons and daughters and it's beyond our comprehension to think of losing them.

We were going to start by explaining that we didn't know Scott Spicola; he was Ali'i Brewing logoArthur's good friend.  But we stopped and thought, of course we knew him.  He grew up like us.  He had great parents and loved ones, just like us.  And above all, he was a brewer.  Just like us.

Scott passed just over four years ago.  One of the thousands of lasting memories of his friends and family was of a certain beer he used to make at the brewery he founded in Maui; Ali'i Brewing Co.  It is apparent to us that Scott dearly loved his adopted home of Hawai'i and sought out ingredients to give his beers an island feel and flavor.  And in this case it was the macadamia nut.  Like Scott, the macadamia isn't native to Hawai'i but it has thrived there since it was introduced and has become a staple part of the culture ever since.  Scott used it to make Ali'i Macadamia Nut Brown Ale, and from all reports it was a great beer.

We've been asked to replicate that beer from a recipe Scott's father found amongst some of Scott's things.  We could tell Scott was a good brewer; his recipe was simple, he let the ingredients speak for themselves.  In fact it was remarkably similar to our Leroy Brown Ale, if but a little darker.  We decided to tweak our Leroy recipe to accommodate Scott's and then to peel off 7 barrels of it so we could add an organic macadamia extract similar to that Scott used.  It wasn't easy to find but sometimes things just fall into place.

Scott was also an avid surfer with a passion for the ocean and after his death the Scott Spicola Memorial Fund was started to benefit AccesSurf; here's their mission surf 3statement: AccesSurf empowers people with disabilities by providing adaptive surfing instruction and therapeutic educational programs on water recreation and enriches lives by assisting families to access the beach and ocean in a barrier free environment.

We think that's pretty cool, sometimes everyone just needs to play; and because of that we are donating all the proceeds from this 7 barrel batch of Ali'i Macadamia Nut Brown Ale to that worthy cause.  Those 7 barrels will go on tap this Friday.  Please try one and toast to Scott's memory (it's also a good cause).

It's comforting to know that when we pass there might be a little something of us left behind for everyone to enjoy. We like to think that we'll have some lasting legacy; some great mark that we've left on the world.  But if it's just a rush of memories in a pint of beer, well, that would probably suit us just fine.

We can only hope we've done justice to Scott's Ali'i.

Mahalo, Scott.

SEASONAL: Ready On Friday!

Easter Menus For BOTH Locations!

The long wait is over!  The kitchens at both our Tempe and Scottsdale locations are primed and ready to take on the one Holiday instantly synonymous with the Spring Season, Easter!  Derived from two ancient traditions: one Judeo-Christian and the other Pagan, both have celebrated death and resurrection themes following the Spring Equinox for millennia (I include this only to provide a disclaimer to anyone in our overly politically correct society who may take offense to a celebration of something that may be seen as exclusively Christian).

peeps

We invite each and everyone of you to stop by and join us for our little celebration of "rebirth" starting with our Tempe location with the following specials available all day long:

Crusted Prime Rib     $17
A generous cut of peppercorn crusted and slow roasted prime rib cooked to your liking, served with a twice baked potato, steamed seasonal vegetables and a spicy horseradish sauce.

Al Forno Lasagna     $13
Oven baked pasta layered with Italian Sausage, Bolognese meat sauce, fresh mozzarella, parmesan and ricotta, topped with house marinara and fresh basil leaves.

Tuna Salad Croissant w/ choice of side     $10
Classic homemade Albacore tuna salad piled high on a toasted croissant with Alfalfa sprouts, sliced tomato, red onion, fresh avocado and Swiss cheese.

Soup:  Shrimp Chowder

Don't worry, our conventional Sunday Brunch menu will still be made available from 10am until 2pm if you're simply looking for your Eggs Benedict or Brewer's Breakfast fix.  Make sure you try our special Homemade Oreo Crusted Cheesecake for dessert, it is quite spectacular!

chocolate bunnies

Our Scottsdale location is also preparing some fantastic additions to their Sunday Menu.  They too will be beginning their day with our regular Sunday Brunch menu, but will also be offering an Easter Quiche with aged Gouda and Roasted Vegetables as an additional Special in the morning.  Their Lunch/Dinner specials are slightly different than the ones you will find in Tempe, so please take a look:

Prime Rib
A generous cut of slow roasted prime rib cooked to your liking, served with a twice baked potato, steamed seasonal vegetables and a spicy horseradish sauce.

Chipotle-Pineapple Glazed Ham
Served with scalloped potatoes and roasted vegetables.

Crab Stuffed Halibut
Served with sauteed asparagus and Parmesan Pasta.

Easter Baseball

Please be aware of the different menus and where each will be served.  Once again we look forward to you and your family joining us this Sunday for an Easter Feast you won't soon forget.

And for all of you sports enthusiasts out there, we will have all your favorite NHL and NBA games on throughout the day before it all culminates in the 1st of 120 (or so) meetings between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox this year beginning at 5pm!  Nothing screams tolerance more than an epic match up between two sworn rivals on a holiday!  With any luck there will be a bench clearing brawl involving numerous ejections...sounds just like the old Easter Celebrations my family used to have (SIGH).

Happy Easter

Official Start of the 2010 MLB Season - As I mentioned in the Great Easter Menu Expose article, Major League Baseball starts its 2010 season Sunday evening.  Stop in and catch all of your favorite teams with our MLB Gameday Satellite Package at either of our locations!  Will the Yankees repeat?  Will the Boston Red Sox exact their revenge on their heated rivals?  Is this the year people yell, "GO ORIOLES" with no hint of sarcasm?  Will our own Diamondbacks get it back together this year?  There are only 162 regular season games to sort this mess out, make sure you catch every one (with exception of Saturday Afternoon's FOX Network Monopoly) of these games

7. Martin Zellar - The onetime lead singer of the now defunct Minnesota bar band The Gear Daddies (made popular by the "Zamboni Song" which was featured prominently in every "Mighty Ducks" movie ever made) recently played the Rhythm Room in Scottsdale.  Although he was only allotted about 45 minutes of play time, he spent a good two hours talking to Randy, Jim, Trevor and myself.  Thank you Martin, and should you ever read this, your solo work and Gear Daddies tunes will always be on our Four Peaks playlist (a special thanks to John Keenen for this picture)!

Martin Zellar
