A Brief Respite...
Ahhhh, the doldrums are already settling in. We have a few things going on this weekend but all in all we expect a really lazy couple of weeks ahead, so get comfy. Regardless, this Thursday through Saturday should be pretty busy with graduation and all the furvor that goes with it, but starting Monday we fully expect a return to normalcy. What this means to you is that the lines to get in will drop substantially, we will be able to catch up on production and our misting system and swamp coolers will be working overtime to keep you content, so stop by!
Four Peaks 12 pack update!!! We now have both Kilt Lifter and Sunbru available in cans for purchase at the Brewery (Sunbru will be arriving at the Grill & Tap by Friday, but they do have Kilt cans)! For $14.99 each, get yourself one today, they're waiting to satisfy!
Now, your weekend update:
Roosevelt Row

This old fashioned house party is just $50 per
person and includes an all you can eat dinner from Athenian
Express with beverages (including Four Peaks Beer) and live acoustic music at the

downtown!) Best of all a number of talented, well-known
artists from Phoenix are installing their work around the house for those of
you looking to add to your collection. Artworks are available for sale starting
at only $50 each. This event begins at 5:30 pm and goes until 9 pm. The Brockway House is located at 506 E. Portland St. in Phoenix.

Join us at the Arizona Center this Saturday from 5:30 until 9:30 pm for a fundraiser to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Phoenix. We will be supplying bottles and cans of your 4PBC favorites! According to their website:

For more information about this evening of fun and giving back call The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix at 602-954-8182. We look forward to seeing you there!
Now let's get on with this week in brew news. Well, we are still so excited about the new canning line that the Brew Crew, Mike from up North and myself all touch on the subject, alas from different angles. I have a conversation with one of our senior servers, Liz Surin, about the upcoming summer months as well as propose a few ideas to help those days go faster! Now in the immortal words of Monty Python:
My philosophy, like color television, is all there in black and white.

You know that the summer season is nigh when I am scrambling
for something... anything to write about.
I can't think of any history lessons, there is no new kitchen equipment
to talk about, James "Wildcard" Scussel has slipped under the radar and we are
currently between seasonals. What is a
restless and mildly incoherent rambler like myself to do? Create a list of 4 things to do this summer,
that's what! Yes, what I have compiled
here is a brief checklist of a few things to do over this long and arduous summer
ahead, so let us begin shall we?
1. Take a 12er of
cans with you: Now that we are in the
process of canning, there is absolutely no excuse to not bring your local
favorite with you wherever you go! Going
to the lake? Grab a 12er of Kilt Lifter to get you through. Planning on getting 18 holes in? Let our Sunbru Kolsch help you reach the 19th
Hole! What about that backyard BBQ your
friend is hosting? Be the life of the
party by bringing cans and bottles with you!
We have all you need to be the life of the party so utilize it! Coming soon: Four
Peaks Can
Koozies! That's right, in the next
couple of weeks our initial supply of can koozies are expected to arrive, the
perfect compliment to that Four
Peaks "Tatter
Hat" you bought last month!
2. Get the Hell Out:
We are well aware that as the temperature rises so does the desire to
leave the Valley, which is why our esteemed Sales staff of Ted and Jon have
positioned our beers throughout the state!
From Flagstaff to Prescott
and Tucson to Bisbee, make sure you
check out the latest locations to find a Four
Peaks beer while
out of town. "How does one go about
this, oh wise sage?" you ask. Easy,
click HERE and simply type in the city you're going to, pretty handy this
Internet thing, huh?
3. The Booze
Cruise: Remember those halcyon days of
yesteryear when all your buddies and yourself got together and went bar hopping
in the middle of the afternoon? I sure
do, we called it the Tour de Tempe back then and we would bike to all the bars
in and around Mill Avenue. Now with the new Phoenix LRT up and running
you have another option to go bar hopping throughout the Valley. Be like your friends at Four
Peaks, we do a
little thing called Mojito Monday where we frequent the hot spots in Phoenix
via the light rail! What a great way to
spend your day! Take advantage of all
the options provided and we hope to see you out and about soon!
4. Hang out on the Four
Peaks Patio: This is
the perfect time to catch some sun, drink some beer and look (be) cool! With the ever present misting system and our
mobile swamp coolers, you can actually spend time in the oppressive Arizona
heat and still stay comfortable. I
encourage you to stop by and do some people watching with your friends here at
the Brewery. Summer afternoon
television is pretty pathetic anyway, so what else do you have to do?
Just remember, we're only 5 ½ months from
Halloween, the big cool down is just around the corner!

The Brewers Blog
So we've canned beer twice now and we keep getting the same
question; how did it go? The short
answer is, "great". We like the short
answer. It seems to placate people until
they say, well, when will be able to get it everywhere? Or, why are you only selling it at your two
locations? Why don't you just roll it
out in huge quantities and take over the world?
Well, because the long answer is not what people want to
hear. It goes like this; the canning
line is a complicated, expensive device, one in which we have a lot of faith
but very little experience. It will take
us time to figure out its intricacies.
The manual on the can seamer alone is 56 pages long. We're cautious to a fault and we refuse to
dump beer on the market that is not up to your standards, much less ours. We're learning a whole new language; body
flange, end hook radius, chuck wall, upper tunnel, etc. This will take time.
People seem to forget that the beer they drink comes from
somewhere; somewhere very technical. All
the ingredients have secret lives which all compete in the scientific world
over which can be the most complicated, the most studied. The equipment used in brewing came about over
centuries of vision and revision by some of the greatest engineering minds on
the planet. More research and
development goes into some of the new German brew kettle designs than goes into
a BMW. Did you know some breweries would
send equipment back to the manufacturer if the degree on the fermentation cone
is off by more than five degrees? Did
you know we know the specific heat of stainless steel? Did you know we worry that the angle of
repose in our grist case is not sufficient to mill in larger quantities of malt? Of course you don't, and the beauty is that
you don't need to, that's our job. All
you need to do is open that can of beer and know that great minds (or, just us,
in this case) have done the worrying for you.
It's a great relationship really but its one that can drive
brewers nuts. How many times have you
seen someone juggling a torch, a bowling ball, and a chain saw and thought,
meh, seen it. Meanwhile that guy has
spent countless years honing this particular talent and performing it every
night and on the inside he's screaming, "DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD THIS IS!" That's a brewer. The main thing is both of us appreciate the
money left in the hat, that's recognition enough, so how could we complain?
In the end though it must be said that the good
brewers (and jugglers, and doctors, and ditch-diggers) make it look easy when
its not. And this is the reason why when
they're pressed about how things are going they usually say, "Great".

5 Questions With... Liz Surin
The enigma known as Elizabeth Surin came to us from the X-treme Bean in April of 2007. That's all we really know with any certainty. I followed some leads and found out that Michigan seemed to fit prominently into her origin, after that the trail got cold...ice cold. This leads me to believe that she has something to hide, and I think I have it all figured out, just bear with me. The year was 1917, the Bolshevik Revolution was coming to its apex and Czar Nicholas II and his family were taken prisoner. If you know anything about Russian History you know that it was widely thought that the Grand Duchess Anastasia may have escaped the firing squad that killed the rest of her family. Sure, these reports were quelled when the bones were discovered and the entire family accounted for via "DNA" tests by "experts" from Russia...COVERUP. I have reason to believe that one Elizabeth Surin is the Great Granddaughter of Anastasia Romanov and is being hunted by former KGB agents and must remain in hiding until the time she can reclaim her rightful throne! Either that or I was just to lazy to ask her about her childhood, but NONETHELESS, I will not rest until I get to the bottom of this! Well, if I would have thought about that angle before I put together this questionnaire I would have made this considerably more scathing. Oh well, you get off easy Liz...or should I say the lost Duchess of the Romanov Dynasty? Don't believe me? Look at her last name, Surin, and rearrange the letters, Rusin...or should I say Russian!!! BUSTED!!
1) What is your
favorite Four Peaks
beer? Please explain.
It's a tough call between the Sunbru and the Raj I.P.A. Nothing warms me up on a cold winter night like the Raj. Conversely, there is nothing more refreshing on a hot, Arizona summer afternoon than an ice cold Sunbru! 2) What places around
the Valley, aside from the Brewery or the Grill & Tap, do you like to frequent
to enjoy a tasty Four
Peaks
beverage? Why?
Casey Moore's. I'm a huge fan of patio drinking. Aside from our own, Casey's definitely has some of the best outdoor seating in Tempe.
3) You, much like
myself, once spent a bit of quality time as a barista; what beverage do you
like to wake up to? Please elaborate as
to why.
Just like my beer, my coffee tastes are also seasonal. My drink is a medium, nonfat latte with a little sugar-free vanilla and 3 shots of espresso. In winter I take it hot, come summer I'll take it over ice.
4) With summer is
rapidly approaching, which Four
Peaks menu item
would you say best compliments these upcoming 110+ degree days?
The Stout Shake! Beer, ice cream and Oreos all in one! Indulge in cold, sweet deliciousness and catch a little buzz at the same time. What could be better?
5) There will
no doubt be plenty of down time coming up as well, what are you planning on
doing to beat the heat this summer?Easy, just grab a 12 pack of Sunbru cans after my shift and head for the pool! Thanks Liz, I hope you don't get too angry that I broke your code, but you're just going to have to try harder to conceal your identity! I mean this lowly Brewsletter editor figured you out with absolutely no use of journalistic ethics or research my friend... or should I say, tovarich?

UPCOMING EVENTS
|
Monday, May 25th: Memorial Day, yup, that's all we got coming up for now. WOOO!
|
The Grill & Tap Dispatch
with Mike Kruchko
So Mother's Day has come and gone and we'd like to thank
everyone that spent the day with us. Both Tempe
and Scottsdale had wonderful
turnouts and it was really great seeing everyone. That being said, we're just a little more
than a week away from Memorial Day; the single most "outdoor beer drinking
holiday" there may be other than 4th of July. Well, as you get excited to hit up the lake
and celebrate; what do we do until then?
Don't sweat it (that was a not so subtle "hey it's hot as hell already"
joke), I've got you covered with more than enough going on!
This week's theme is an easy one. How can I get out and have some fun with a
twelve pack or two of the new Kilt Lifter or Sunbru cans? Well, there's always the summer movie
premieres such as the sequel to Da Vinci Code; Angels & Demons, but unfortunately we can not condone sneaking beers into the theater. What we do condone however is excessive
tailgating out at Cricket Pavilion for this Thursday's Jimmy Buffet show. Now, I'll admit, I've never totally
understood the "Parrot Head" thing, but there's no doubt that they know how to
party. So, bam!, a perfect place to pop open some
Kilt cans and get your Pencil Thin
Mustache on!
What if you fall into my age group and you just missed the
whole Buffet thing? Well, Friday may be
right up your alley at the exact same venue.
Two of the 90's biggest musical influences join together for what will
no doubt be an amazing show. Nine Inch
Nails & Jane's Addiction will be performing at the Cricket Wireless Pavilion
as well. Friday is only supposed to top
out at 100 degrees, so why not pack the cooler and hit the mosh pit for old
times? Just make sure to not break a hip
; )
Live music not your thing?
Maybe you just need to get your butt out of the heat for the weekend. I've got some ideas for you as well. I'm not sure all of you have gotten an
opportunity to check out the new cans or 12 packs, but there's a great little
line on them that says "Pack It In, Pack It Out"...well, that can only mean one
thing. Get off the beaten path a little
and hit the wilderness! Everyone knows
of the nearby lakes like Canyon and Saguaro, but what about taking the weekend
off and camping out in the Ponderosa Pine Trees of Prescott? Lynx
Lake is a great little area to hit
for a day trip of fishing or even a weekend camping spot with plenty of mountain
biking and hiking. (If you'd like, click HERE for more
information on Lynx Lake)
I could go on and on listing some of my favorite places to get
out to enjoy the outdoors, but finding your destination is half the fun. What I'm trying to get at is now that we can
enjoy our favorite beer away from the bar, house, etc., let's take advantage and have fun. In my opinion the best resource for finding a
good hike or camping destination is HikeArizona.com,
that being said; the Grill & Tap is currently stocked up with plenty of
Kilt Lifter 12 packs (don't forget Kilt, 8th St. & Hop Knot
bottles as well) and will be receiving our Sunbru 12 packs on Friday...just in
time for the weekend. So let's take
this next week and practice our Memorial Day weekend celebration a little early
and while you're at it, don't forget to take some pics of our beer in some cool
places. Word has it, that a can of Kilt
Lifter was spotted this weekend in Vegas at Caesar's Palace...now that's good
times!
You can contact us in
Scottsdale at 480-991-1795 or at Scottsdale@fourpeaks.com

A Few Parting Words...
Just a couple quick asides before we move on for another week. The S-expeditors are losing a member of their beloved group. If anyone out there thinks they have what it takes to assemble salads, deliver food and condiments as well as make the ladies swoon with hot dance moves, spot on raps and staring nonchalantly into the distance, please send your application and head shot to their band managers email, steve@fourpeaks.com. Do you think you can join the elite? Only serious applications will be considered! We would all like to wish our very own Randy Schultz the best of luck this weekend as he takes an Outdoor Survival Course. Yes, for the next 4 days our very own equivalent of Bear Grylls and Les Stroud (the gentlemen from Man vs. Wild and Survivorman respectively) takes on Mother Nature to prove once and for all who's the boss! Lastly, would you like to show my favorite action hero and yours, "Wild Card" Scussel how much you love him by going on a "Kentucky Waterfall" Jesse Scavenger Hunt (click HERE for the full back story)? Why not get some special presale tickets to the one location we can almost guarantee he'll show up at, Monster Jam coming up on August 1st in Glendale. Through sources close to Wild Card himself, we have received word that the special presale code is "JAMSTH" and can be used by clicking HERE. If you can secure a picture and submit it to the "Wild Card" Scussel Fanclub, you can get a special surprise* from the brewery! * there is neither a special surprise OR a "Wild Card" Fanclub at this time. Customer Comment Of The Week...Sometimes we receive comments that bring to our attention things that are missing or aspects that we may have overlooked, not too long ago we received an e-mail from Brian who had an inquiry. Brian? "Had breakfast at the bar Sunday morning. Bartender
and staff were great. Food was exceptional. Having been to the Strong Beer
Festival the night before, a Bloody Mary was on tap for Sunday morning and
not anymore beer unfortunately. I saw that you sell tap handles in the
brewery but am unable to find them on your web site. Is this product only sold
in the brewery or is there a way that I can purchase a tap handle from afar?
Thanks in advance for your time and anticipated response."Very good question. Yes we do sell them even though they are not currently listed on the website. If anyone is interested they can call the Four Peaks Merchandise Hotline at (480) 303-9967 ext. 208. They are of a fine ceramic construction and available for $45 including shipping and handling (available in Kilt Lifter, 8th Street, Hop Knot, Hefeweizen, and Sunbru only). Cheers!
In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England,
when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them to mind
their own pints and quarts and settle down. It's where we get the
phrase "mind your P's and Q's.
