Brave New World
Tragic news in the world of Brewsletter-dom. Jim Norman is no longer with us. He is an unfortunate casualty of one-too-many KFC Double Down Sandwiches. For those of you unfamiliar, KFC's Double Down is essentially a sandwich with two chicken filets
taking the place of a bun. In between are two pieces of delicious bacon,
melted slices of mouth-watering Monterey and pepper jack cheeses and a zesty sauce. After consuming a full six of these sandwiches, he washed it down with a 16 oz. cup of the Colonel's famous gravy (brown, of course). With each Double Down alone consisting of roughly 540 calories - 290 of these calories coming directly from fat - his body just never had a chance. According to eyewitnesses, as Jim clutched what remained of a Double Down his dying words were, "From Hell's heart, I stab at thee... For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee...". It is still unclear as to which character he was referencing; Ahab from Moby Dick or Khan from Star Trek II. Despite our mourning, we know that if James were with us right now he would want the Brewsletter to carry on, so on that note... American Craft Beer Week is in currently in full swing!! Hundreds of brew pubs around this great nation are in the midst of celebrating a full week that recognizes the rise of local and small breweries in the United States. Did you know that in a year of stationary or declining sales for domestic "premium" beers (i.e. the "Big 3"), the craft beer market showed a sharp increase? Sales of craft beer rose more than 9% from March of '09 through March of this year. At the same time the larger domestic premium styles dropped about 6% (similarly, premium light beers dropped 2%). Meanwhile, the total number of U.S. craft brewers continues to rise, more and more people are purchasing locally produced beer and these same locally produced breweries have been touted as one of the "Top 5 Trends to Watch in 2010" by The National Restaurant Association Chef Survey. This is in no small part due to folks like you who pride themselves on having a palate that demands more. In honor of American Craft Beer Week, the Four Peaks Brewery in Tempe will be offering our Hopsquatch Barley Wine from now through Sunday. Please, stop in and enjoy one with us throughout the remainder of this week! Stats on the Craft Beer Explosion from The Brewers Association Even more stats from beernews.orgAnother Craft Beer article for anyone who might be doing a school projectSpeaking of local, there is a new destination in downtown Phoenix that is the very epitome of local and original. It's called The duce and it's located on the corner of Central and Lincoln in a converted warehouse from the 1920's. Part restaurant, part bar, part coffee shop, part clothing store; it's all that and so much more. They're planning on having an "orange crush" party and 2 for 1 cocktail
choices for the Suns playoff home game this Sunday. Check them out! Check out their 12 News video Four Peaks Summer Beer Profile:
The Arizona Peach AleFor a very, VERY long time our Arizona Peach Ale was considered the "girlie" beer amongst a legion of "big boy beers" that wore their hops on their sleeve like a badge of honor. This is no longer the case. The rising interest in the craft beer market that began in the '80's coincided at roughly the same time our latest generation of beer drinkers was being born. Consequently, a lot of the stigmas that were initially associated with beers having fruit or an otherwise uncharacteristic flavor no longer apply. In several emails and Yelp reviews that I've read, it appears our Arizona Peach Ale has built up quite a reputation over the past couple of years and is quickly becoming one of our more popular varieties. This is a popularity that will only intensify as the summer progresses. Here are some quick stats supplied to us from our Brewers: -----------------------------
Arizona Peach Ale Style: Fruit 5% abv Water Used: Burton
A light fruit beer with strong peach aroma but not an overpowering peach flavor. We chose peach because believe it or not, peaches can thrive in Arizona and the flavor is very compatible with beer. Commercial Example: A true one-of-a-kind
-------------------------- Let's keep it simple. From the Brewers we get a further taste of what has quickly become one of the most talked about seasonal beers in a long time. The Grill & Tap Dispatch keeps it to the point, and upon returning from my self imposed exile I fill you in on where I've been spending some time. Let's go!

The Brewers Blog
We apologize for our absence last week
but due to an ongoing Editor/Artist feud (damn you Jimmy Norman.
FREE TIMMY!!!), we decided to follow Los Angeles' lead and boycott
the Blog for completely self-serving reasons.
OK, we skipped it out of brazen
laziness;
but that doesn't make our boycott less noble...
Something we, and our fellow brewers,
have not been lazy about is American Craft Beer Week; of which you are
in the middle. Haven't heard of it? Well, shoot, we're
kind of a big deal...
American Craft Beer Week Resolution.pdf
Anyway... It's good to see
congress putting down their mirrors and recognizing the good that this
small but growing industry does for all of us. Who knows, maybe
a third party will develop; The Beer Party, now that sounds fun.
In addition to digging into our private
stash of squirreled-away beer; which included a keg of Double Knot and
will continue with Hopsquatch Barleywine being available all week, we
are very excited about the Collaboration RyePA that we are going to
brew with Papago Brewing Co., Old World Brewing Co., SanTan Brewing
Co., Sonoran Brewing Co., Sleepy Dog Brewery and Saloon, and the Sun
Up Brewery. It happens this Friday and we've even gotten a little
press for it:

It's been fun so far. We're
fortunate to have a great group of brewers in the Valley and in the
state that if you haven't tried their offerings, well, you're really
missing out. We know, we know, we're not California, and
we're not Colorado, and we're not Oregon. We're Arizona;
and with all of the National boycotts and bashing we've gotten lately
it's nice to have just one more thing to be proud of on the local
scene.
Here's to beer! |
The Grill & Tap Dispatch
With Dave Tanzi
The
only thing we love more than our weekly editorial is slinging great pub
fare
and hand-crafted ales, and exchanging witty banter with our gentlemanly
and
lady-like clientele, and thanks to your consistently steady patronage
over the
past few days, Wednesday sort of snuck up on us this week.
So first and foremost, from all of us at the
Grill & Tap, much gratitude and we hope to keep seeing you in droves
as the
NHL and NBA playoffs continue; and as graduation, retirement, and
homecoming
parties continue to come our way. It is
truly our pleasure to serve you.
A
melancholy happy trails to our main man this past spring, Mr. Leroy
Brown. An unavoidable casualty of a busy season,
you
were loved greatly, and will be missed as such.
Stay tuned to the Brewer's Blog for details about our next stand
out
seasonal.
That's
all for now from the 85260; in the coming weeks, we reveal our inside
source as
to the final destination of King James, how L'Eggs can clean up the oil
spill
in the gulf, and 20 questions with Mikhail Prokhorov.

F.O.F.P (Friends of Four Peaks)
The Yucca
Tap Room has been called everything from a dive bar to a live music lover's
heaven for several years. Throughout,
they've stayed popular by avoiding trends and gimmicks that seem to sink so many bars around
town. That is why
many people were both shocked and pleasantly surprised with a move they
orchestrated earlier this year.
As of this February
they added a craft beer lounge by expanding into the property right next door
(adios Capistrano's). Although
connected, they both have their own unique identity. This is the perfect way to placate people
from both camps; those who liked it the way it was and those who craved something
more.
The main
room is still the low lit, windowless bar and music stage we all know and love,
but by walking through one simple door you enter a different world. Looking around you'll quickly notice an online
jukebox, pool tables, some HD televisions, a vast array of hard to find
imported and micro brew beers and a kitchen.
You heard right, the Yucca now offers a full menu to the thirsty masses
every night (including everyone's favorite bar food, pizza, which is a must get!).
The Yucca
Tap Room also serves 4 types of your Four Peaks favorites, that's half of our
regular lineup! Kilt Lifter, check. 8th Street, you betcha. Sunbru, that's an affirmative. Hop Knot, come and get it. You can always opt for a Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas or even a Lost Coast if you feel like mixing it up a bit,
we won't be offended.
Oh yeah, and they have great live music everyday of the week, but I'll bet you already knew that!
The Yucca Tap Room is located at 29 W. Southern Ave. (Southwest Corner of
Southern and Mill).

The Final Countdown (The GOB Edition)
And with
that we come to the end of another Brewsletter.
As we all slowly come to grips with the loss of my arch nemesis James "Jim"
Norman by the hand of the nefarious chicken baron Colonel Sanders, let's take
care of some other noteworthy subjects. 1. The
Phoenix Suns - They are currently fighting to become the NBA Western Division
Champion. All that can be said is that
we wish them the best of luck because it's going to be a tough series. Thank the NBA for dragging these things out
as long as possible. The next games are scheduled for Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday
the 27th, Saturday the 29th and Monday the 31st
(if it goes that far). Stop in to watch
each and every game as we cheer them on to victory. 2. The
First 100 degree day - It's probably coming either tomorrow or Friday. Just thinking about it makes me crave a
Sunbru. How about you? 3. Cheese
Puff Day - It's on the calendar for Wednesday, June 9th. Prepare yourself accordingly. 4. Father's
Day - Is coming up on June 20th. We have some special surprises in store for
this year's celebration, the menu and details to be revealed in the coming
weeks. 5. World
Cup Soccer - Beginning on June 11th. Stop by either location to experience the excitement of soccer's equivalent to the Super Bowl, World Series and the
Stanley Cup all rolled into one! 6. Mount St. Helens - The 30th Anniversary of the 1980 eruption was
just yesterday, just thought you'd like to know. 7. Harry
Potter Tattoos - A trend that is currently taking the Four Peaks world by storm! Be the first person on your block to get
one! Join the Dumbledore Army which is rapidly
becoming more popular (and more permanent) than the KISS Army! Join the likes of Trevor and... well, Trevor, in displaying your devotion to the J.K. Rowling Empire! Dumbledore is dead, long live Dumbledore!! 8. Memorial Day - The official kick off to the
summer season is less than two weeks away.
Some of the early forecasts are indicating that it should be mostly
sunny with a 95% chance of beer drinking. We'll
be showcasing all of your favorite Major League Baseball games so why go
anywhere else? 9. Swingline
Stapler Update - Jessica Mires Roche is pleased to
announce the arrival of her brand new Swingline Series XT4500 Staple
Implementation Unit. It is reported to
be Max Power-proof and will NOT be taken off of her desk! We wish Jessica and her stapler nothing but happiness
for many years to come. Congratulations!
Cheers!
