OCTOBER 2008

Issue: #5

Our Unprecedented 5th Issue of October!

You have, dear reader, on your screen our 5th issue of this wonderful October.  I know all this excitement has you wound up, but try to contain yourself!  Seeing as all the events we were touting in the last few issues are slowly coming to a conclusion this week, I have alot of free space to exercise your mind.  Where do I start?world series trophy

Topic number 1 in the "who the hell cares" file.  How about that World Series, huh?  Judging by the large turn out to view the east coast juggernaut that is the Philadelphia Phillies against the Gulf Coast Crushers known as the Tampa Bay Rays, we are all awaiting the final result.  It's interesting to note that the most thrilling part of this Fall Classic has turned out to be the weather.  The first postponement of a World Series ever!  Whatever are we to do!

Hey, just because no one cares who wins or loses, don't let that deter you from stopping by to purchase a "Lou Bru."  One dollar of every pint of Kolsch sold goes to finding a cure to ALS for as long as the Series lasts.  Let's rally around a cause my friends.

In other news, Pumpkin Porter consumption appears to be up from last year.  Even though we have restricted it to only pints and pilsners, the response has been outstanding!  Feel free to come on back, because the brewers keep making more!

We have also begun preperations for the Four Peaks Official Canning System (4POCS).  We are putting the draining in place and compiling designs for both cans and packaging as we speak.  We will keep you posted in the upcoming months as everything starts falling into place!

Things to do Saturday, November 1st:

As if Halloween isn't enough for you this weekend, keep you calendar open this Saturday for The Fourth Annual Fall Festival at The Duck and Decanter in Phoenix.  This event begins at 10 am and goes until 4 pm.  As the link above informs there is live music, free food, fun for kids and Four Peaks beer!  This is a wonderful celebration of all things local be it food, drink, shopping or what have you... definitely something to check out!

If you feel the need to get out of town this Saturday instead, perhaps the Lake Havasu Chillin' N' Swillin' Brew Fest from 2 pm until 6 pm is

chill n swill

more appealing!  In conjunction with the Lake Havasu London Bridge Days, this function is a 21 and over function only and costs $25 in advance and $30 day of event.  Four Peaks will be joining several other local and national breweries with all proceeds going to local scout troops as well as charities and scholarships for children.  Thus allowing you to literally say you are drinking for the kids!

Well, in this weeks issue we recap our Pumpkin Carving Contest, along with wonderful pictures of the event scattered throughout.  The Brewers take time to smell the roses, we receive a garbled transmission from Karina, and Four Peaks Manager Kasey Stewart sits down and has a chat with us.

Au revoir,

Your Friends at The Four Peaks Brewery and Four Peaks Grill & Tap

Sharp Objects and Alcohol

Once again the promise of free beer and the opportunity to create brought out throngs of people.  Although not everyone won something, no onecarving crowd left dejected.  The creative think tank that became the Four Peaks Back Bar area was comparable only to that of the scientists brought together for the Manhattan Project!

Although some people went with the traditional jack o' lantern style of old, there were some folks crazy enough to put together football helmets, ASU logos, and even a work that can only be called a "Pumpkin Porter Pool Party."  All I can say is wow.

We had participants show up a good 30 minutes before the official start time just to get a good spot (and more than a few Pumpkin Porters).  Although there were plenty sharp objects spotted, no injuries or casualties were reported.  It's true, in over ten years of having this competition we have a spotless injury record!

Please feel free to stop in and check out the remaining pumpkins before they waste away..

The Grill & Tap Dispatch

by Karina Lang

In a bizarre series of events vaguely reminiscent of a bad Hollywaliens in a fieldood movie from the 1950's, Karina Lang appears to be abducted by space aliens!  The story, from what I was able to piece together, involves walking in the woods late at night, a series of bright lights, some strange electromagnetic current, and missing time.  Fortunately, the scientists at SETI received what appears to be the voice of Ms. Lang defiantly defying the will of her alien kidnappersto send us her weekly dispatch.  Emanating from somewhere outside the Sigma Virulian 7 system, this is the transmission received in its entirety:

"...for those of you in the North Scottdale area, don't forget to stop in on Halloween!  Not only will your favorite Four Peaks employees be dressed up, but we have some tasty Cider drink specials as well as Pumpkin Soup...YUM! OK, I said that was the last thing but I lied..
.one more sidenote everyone...The Four Peaks 4th Annual Charity Golf Tournament is spots away from reaching capacity...if you want to grab one of the last ones, go to www.fourpeaks.com and sign up ASAP!  Happy early Halloween!  Be safe this weekend."

We all hope for Karina's safe return unharmed before Halloween arrives.  Damn you evil aliens!!  Leave our species alone!

You can contact Karina at (#F*) D5%xX-89hf565fGy46d ext.5\^, interstellar operators are standing by.

5 Questions With Kasey Stewart

It seems appropriate that this weeks questions would focus on Kasey Stewart.  Kasey will be celebrating her 3rd anniversary with the company on Halloween.  She is one of the more recognizable faces at the Tempe location by being the predominant daytime floor manager and the first face I see on Monday mornings.  Bringing joy to the masses with her affable personality, indelible charm, and sass.

That should be just about enough to get the schedule I want for the next 5 years!

Let us begin the interrogation!

1.  What is your favorite Four Peaks beer of all time?  Explain.

That's tough, there are so many delicious beers to chose from. I would probably have to say the 8th Street Ale is my favorite.  I love it's mellow bitterness and how drinkable it is, sometimes it goes down just a little too easy.

2.  Being raised in Colorado, you are obviously aware that in 1861 outgoing President James Buchanan signed an act of Congress organizing the free territory of Colorado, 15 years later, in 1876, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the proclamation making Colorado the 38th State.  Who was/is your favorite president?  Why?

Hmm, I've never really thought about it.  I guess it would be Bill Pullman in Independence Day because he saved the world from aliens.

3.  Which Four Peaks soup do you circle on your calendar as the one too delicious to pass up?  Why?

Mmmmm, Tomato Basil on a cold day with a grilled cheese sandwich.  It's almost as good as mom used to make.

4.  What does the word Daughtry mean to you?

Funny Tim, real funny.  So I might be a little obsessed with Chris Daughtry, what's your point?

5.  At the end of a long, arduous day of dealing with the ins and outs of managing Team Four Peaks, what is your preferred method of relaxing?  10 extras points if it involves some sort of hard liquor.

My favorite thing to do is go home, lay on the couch, and enjoy a Three Olives Grape and soda while I'm getting a foot rub.

Thank you for your participation in this weeks 5 questions and we all wish you a Happy Anniversary this Friday!

Brewers Blog XXI:  To Everything Turn, Turn, Turn

Be grateful.
Help more.
Laugh at yourself.
Smile at others.
Enjoy things.
Slow down ...

This is a partial to-do list we formulated while sitting through (and, honestly, enjoying) a eulogy for the father of a friend.  There's been enough funeral talk on the old Brewsletter so we won't go into that.  But, to paraphrase Samuel Johnson, nothing focuses the mind like a funeral.

We've all got a list but why are the things on these lists so hard to do?   Obviously for some they're not but they do tend to get pushed in the background for most.  Is it the cumulative effect of all the little crap life tosses at you that makes the list harder or is it just one thing that does it?  Who knows, but we will try to tackle our list starting with the first item.

Thank you.

We really are grateful for everything this job has given us and especially for the loyal following we've been afforded from you, the customer.  These aren't easy times and you've stuck with us, so again, thank you.  As a matter of fact, we're working on the new carton for the new cans.  Maybe we can find some space to say thanks on them.  We'll look into it.

As far as the rest of the list we think we'll jump to the end for now and enjoy a beer, rest our bones, and slow down a bit.  You're always welcome to join us.

CASK-CONDITIONED AND SEASONALS

cask components

IN SCOTTSDALE THIS WEEK

8th Street Ale:
English bitters are known for their balance of malt and hop flavors and aromas.  Bitters are, ironically not all that bitter.  The name comes from a time when people were used to sweet, strong malty beers.  The new bitter style was lower in alcohol and more balanced, so, to the regular beer drinker it seemed more bitter.  We use all English hops (Goldings and Fuggles) for authenticity.

IN TEMPE THIS WEEK

Dry-Hopped Porter:  Our delicious dark colored beer made with a majority of darker malts.  This time around we dry-hopped the cask.  For the inquisitive folk out there, dry hopping involves the addition of hops after the wort has cooled towards the end of the brewing process, what this does is add extra flavor and aroma to the final result.

SEASONAL

Pumpkin Porter:
The undisputed "Lord of Our Seasonals"  has people lined up around the corner!  There is no better indicator of the beginning of a beautiful Phoenix autumn.  Come in now and get the fix I know you've been craving!

A Few Parting Words...

As we bid October a fond farewell, I would like to remind all of you out there that the majority of America will observe Daylight Saving Time this Sunday at 2 am.  What this means to all of you is:
DST posterkasey pumpkin carvingbill pullman
joey carving1)  All football games will now start an hour later, so all 10:00 NFL games will now be at 11:00, please take note that we now open at 10 am for football Sundays.

2)  All relatives in other parts of the country (unless here in Arizona, Hawaii and parts, that's right... parts of Indiana) have altered there local time just to screw with you!

3)  We wonder why a practice that began in World War One to increase war time production still figures so prominantly in the 21st Century.

It's true, the entire concept of Daylight Saving Time was conceived by William Willett in 1905.  As an avid golfer who hated to cut his game short at dusk coupled with his concern that too many of his fellow Englishmen slept the summer days away, he had a catharthis... alter time!  Although his proposal was unsuccessful for years, with the advent of WWI, Germany and its allies utilized the concept in 1916.  Most of Europe, Russia and the U.S. followed suit over the next two years.

This concept was implemented and repealed many times over the years (end of WWI, beginning of WWII, etc.) until the standardization of a peacetime DST was employed in 1966.

To be quite honest, the history of Daylight Saving Time eerily mirrors the history of the U.S. income tax, it's actually quite...spooky!  Happy Halloween everybody!

Next week we'll discuss the topic of our new President in a round table Forum with Dan Rather, Katie Couic, Oprah Winfrey and Maury Povich.
